Music Therapist

Big Bend Hospice (BBH) is your “Hometown Hospice” providing compassionate end-of-life care for over 40 years to the Big Bend region. Guided by our values of integrity, respect, and excellence, we are seeking an experienced Board-Certified Music Therapist to join our team full time. 

The Board-Certified Music Therapist provides patient care using solid musical skills and clinical understanding. The Music Therapist coordinates with the interdisciplinary team and other music therapists and is responsible for planning, implementing, and documenting music therapy interventions. The Music Therapist works with a diverse group of Hospice patients from various age groups and their family members within the Big Bend Hospice service areas.  

 

Position Duties and Responsibilities:  
The Music Therapist, responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following: 

  • Attends staff meetings, in-service trainings, continuing education and workshops, and ongoing clinical supervision.  
  • Attends and participates in interdisciplinary team meetings; assists in developing care plans; facilitates understanding of the role of a Music Therapist and the use of music therapy interventions.                                
  • Participates in Orientation, Volunteer training, and other presentations or events as assigned. 
  • Participates on Hospice committees as assigned.                                      
  • Maintains focus on weekly scheduling and achieving productivity while remaining consistently open to the changing needs of patients/families and IDG issues.                      
  • Maintains standards of excellence according to the American Music Therapy Association and the Certification Board for Music Therapists, NHO, CHAP, and Hospice policy and procedure. 
  • Performs music therapy assessment and assists in the development and implementation of goal-directed family care plan. Conducts ongoing reassessment of patient/family needs and updates plan of care as needed.       
  • Maintains documentation in a manner reflecting timeliness, completeness, accuracy, legibility, clarity of goal, assessment and plan, and appropriateness and relevance of intervention. 
  • Provides direct service to hospice patients and their families in homes, inpatient settings, and alternative homes. Independently manages caseload within parameters set by Manager of Complementary Therapies.                       
  • Consult with clinical staff about patient referrals to assess needs and prioritize interventions. 
  • Participates in program development and research studies as assigned.                   
  • Provides bereavement follow-up to family members when determined appropriate by team members or grief support counselors.
  • After one year of employment and upon the approval of the Music Therapy Internship Supervisor and Manager of Complementary Therapies approval, may supervise FSU practicum student; after one semester of practicum supervision or required employment period, may assist with intern supervision.        
  • Consults and collaborates with other professionals to promote quality and continuity of patient/family care.                        
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Work Schedule:  

  • Monday through Friday 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

This position may include travel in the following Florida counties:

  • Liberty County,
  • Madison County,
  • Taylor County,
  • Gulf County
  • and Wakulla County.

Skills & Qualifications


Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in music therapy or other bachelor’s degree with Music Therapy equivalency.
  • Board certified as a Music Therapist by the Certification Board for Music Therapists or a BBH Music Therapy Intern who is eligible to sit for the Music Therapist-Board Certified Exam and successfully pass it within the first six months of hire.   

Skills & Abilities: 

  • Soothing and pleasant singing voice.
  • Ability to learn substantial amounts of music quickly.
  • Proficiency in keyboard and guitar as accompanying instruments.
  • Proficiency in utilizing music therapy techniques to assist patient and family with the following:  visual motor stimulation; pain, discomfort; anxiety, restlessness, respiratory difficulties, insomnia; depression, emotional outlet; loss of speech or language barrier; need for meaningful activity; lack of support system, isolation; difficulty expressing feelings or interacting with others; need for spiritual expression; anticipatory grief, multiple losses.
  • Ability to create a safe environment and mode of expression through music.
  • Experience with terminally ill and geriatric populations preferred.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of age-appropriate music spanning from newborn to geriatrics
  • Knowledge of all developmental stages of life.
  • Understanding of the grief process, both for children and adults.
  • Ability to travel to off-site locations.
  • Ability to work unsupervised, exercising a high degree of discretion and independent judgment.
  • Ability to physically access any home, hospital, nursing home, and ALF in the BBH service area, e.g., navigate stairs, narrow stairs, narrow spaces, lack of air conditioning, etc.
  • Able to perform each one of the responsibilities described to continue at-will employment with Big Bend Hospice
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Proficiency with or ability to quickly learn all technology applications required for job-related duties including EMR, music therapy equipment, etc. 

Requirements: 

  • Valid driver’s license, auto insurance, and reliable transportation. 
  • Board certified as a Music Therapist by the Certification Board for Music Therapists
