The Ethics Coordinator supports the University's commitment to integrity, accountability, and ethical conduct by managing ethics-related programs, investigations, and awareness initiatives. This role works closely with Internal Audit, Compliance, HR, and other departments to promote a culture of ethical behavior and ensure adherence to applicable laws, regulations, and University policies.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop, implement, and maintain ethics-related policies, procedures, and training programs.
  • Receive, document, and triage ethics complaints; assist with investigations into alleged misconduct, including conflicts of interest, fraud, and policy violations.
  • Track ethics cases, trends, and outcomes; prepare reports for leadership and the Audit Committee.
  • Coordinate ethics education and outreach efforts to promote understanding of ethical standards and reporting mechanisms.
  • Assist with internal audit planning and fieldwork as needed, particularly in areas involving ethics and compliance.
  • Provide subject matter expertise on ethical risks and controls.
  • Serve as a resource to departments on ethical issues; collaborate with Compliance, HR, Legal, and other stakeholders to ensure consistent handling of ethics concerns.
  • Strictly adheres to Liberty University policies, representing the University in an exemplary manner.
  • Works effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering LU’s Christian model and Mission – Training Champions for Christ.

QUALIFICATIONS AND CREDENTIALS

Education and Experience

Tier I:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, public administration, ethics, or related field (Master’s or professional certification preferred)
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in ethics, compliance, audit, or related field
  • Strong understanding of regulatory requirements, internal controls, and investigative procedures
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and professionalism
  • Ability to articulate and defend the unique Christian educational mission and vision of Liberty University and its subsidiaries to a wide variety of individuals and groups.
  • Individual must not be in default on any federal student or parent loan.
  • Individual must not be convicted of, or pled nolo contendere or guilty to, a crime involving the acquisition, use, or expenditure of federal, state, or local government funds, -or- be administratively or judicially determined to have committed fraud or any other material violation of law involving federal, state, or local government funds (CFR 668.14(b)(18)(i))

Tier II:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, public administration, ethics, or related field (Master’s or professional certification preferred)
  • 5+ years of experience in ethics, compliance, audit, or related field
  • Strong understanding of regulatory requirements, internal controls, and investigative procedures
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and professionalism
  • Ability to articulate and defend the unique Christian educational mission and vision of Liberty University and its subsidiaries to a wide variety of individuals and groups.
  • Individual must not be in default on any federal student or parent loan.

Preferred Certifications:

  • Certified Compliance & Ethics Professional (CCEP)
  • Certified Internal Auditor (CIA)
  • Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE)
  • Juris Masters or Juris Doctorate degree

ABILITIES AND COMPETENCIES ESSENTIAL TO THE FUNCTION OF THE JOB

Communication and Comprehension

  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing to convey clear, well articulated information.
  • Ability to understand, speak, and write English in order to convey messages and correspond in an articulate and professional manner.
  • Possess public communication skills that allow professional representation of Liberty University.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Computer skills.

Problem Solving

  • Intuitively able to reason, analyze information and events, and apply judgment in order to solve problems of both a routine and complex nature.

Physical and Sensory Abilities

  • May be required to sit to perform deskwork or type on a keyboard.
  • Regularly required to hear and speak in order to effectively communicate orally.
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, and climb stairs to move about the campus.
  • Handle materials, reach overhead, kneel or stoop in order to conduct business.
  • Regularly lift 10 or fewer pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work Environment

The working environment in which one will typically perform the essential functions of this position is a climate-controlled setting.  It is well lighted, and the noise level is moderate.  Working environment may include facilitation of events outdoors occasionally.  

Driving Requirements

If the employee is required to travel in performing the duties and responsibilities of the position, the use of one’s personal vehicle (or LU vehicles) may be required for travel.  Proof of a valid driver’s license, an acceptable DMV record, LU Driving Approval, and liability insurance is required when driving in the performance of the employee’s position.
