Position Overview
The Senior Project Manager has the ultimate responsibility for all assigned projects and customer accounts in the Industrial Division. Additionally, the Senior Project Manager must accept the final responsibility and accountability for the execution of all project contracts or customer accounts as assigned by Alterman management. These tasks are to be carried out at the lowest cost, safely, and at the highest quality consistent with contract requirements and good business practices. Additionally, The Senior Project Manager will have the responsibility to direct and lead project managers, assistant project managers, and other support staff assigned to specific accounts or projects under the Senior Project Manager’s overall assigned responsibility. This position reports directly to the Director of Water/Wastewater.
Position Specific Responsibilities
Account Management:
- Take ownership and responsibility for assigned accounts.
- Ensure long term customer/account satisfaction and grow revenue and opportunities with assigned accounts.
- Evaluate bidding and negotiating opportunities of assigned accounts.
- Take profit and loss responsibility for assigned projects or accounts.
- Maintain effective communications with appropriate Alterman personnel, keeping them informed of all aspects relevant to the duties to which they have been assigned.
- Advise the Director of Water/Wastewater of any significant problems encountered timely, along with recommended solutions.
Project Management:
- Manage larger projects or multiple customer accounts in accordance with Alterman procedures and policies.
- Project set-up responsibility.
- Budgeting and Job Cost Entry for (material - labor – subcontracts - DJE).
- Scheduling (construction - material - labor - cash).
- Schedule of values (billing - cash flow).
- Project documents (permits, bonds, insurance).
- Monitor project productivity (labor % complete/earned value - cost codes – man-loading estimate vs actual status).
- Prepare accurate job cost projections regularly as directed.
- Lead 25-50-75-90% project review meetings and prepare meeting documentation,
- Monitor and prepare dispute/claim avoidance.
- Interpret contract.
- Prepare Change Order proposals and quotations.
- Define C.O. quoting, material pricing, laboring, and mark-up –job default.
- Maintain positive cash flow position through appropriate billings and collections.
- Staff and/or manage projects with back-up capabilities.
- Attend project meetings.
- Project Close Out:
- Punch list, signoff, final billing, retainage, warranty, returns, close P.O.'s, record documents.
- Schedule and lead project close out meetings and prepare close out documents.
Project Planning:
- Working in conjunction with Preconstruction and Project Support group, take a proactive approach to project planning in order to maximize profit opportunities.
- Review plans and specification.
- Review estimate and prepare construction estimate by phase or system as needed to properly manage project, order materials, and understand risks and labor requirements.
- Lead and direct project kick off meetings in conjunction with Estimating group.
- Lead re-engineering project efforts to maximize profit opportunities.
- Lead and capitalize on pre-fabrication opportunities working in conjunction with PC&PS group.
- Ensure appropriate safety programs are initiated, safety effort is monitored throughout project, and investigate and prepare a report of findings when a safety incident occurs on your project.
Material Procurement:
- In coordination with Purchasing and following company policies, timely procure and coordinate delivery of appropriate materials to the project while achieving the project material budgets.
- Review plans and specifications.
- Review quotations and bill of materials.
- Evaluation installed cost (material cost and installation vs. budget).
- Prepare 200 P.O.’s (packages, bulk buys and subcontracts) in coordination with Purchasing and Risk Management.
- Plan material deliveries.
- Review and process shop drawings.
- Issue material releases.
- Monitor material use (quantity - installation).
- Monitor material/subcontract (invoicing and payment).
- Expedite material delivery.
- Maintain follow up system to assure material delivery.
- Arrange for returns of extra materials.
- Request and process O & M manuals.
Labor:
- Coordinate with Workforce team for project labor and productivity in order to achieve the project labor budget.
- Monitor and enforce corporate safety policies.
- Arrange for the selection and placement of key supervisory personnel in coordination with the Workforce team.
- Evaluate the performance of key supervisory personnel in conjunction with the Workforce team– address deficiencies timely and make changes needed to address problems with supervision or field productivity.
- Assist and support the project foreman as required to promote the most cost-effective installation.
- Monitor project labor productivity and budgets. Take appropriate action on a timely basis.
- Monitor and enforce corporate safety policies.
- Maintain material files (P.O., memo, quotes, ship drawings, test reports).
- Monitor field record drawings.
- Accumulate and prepare records (O&M manuals, as builts, close outs).
General Responsibilities:
- Participate fully in all Corporate and other training as required.
- Oversee work and actions of all Direct Reports to ensure that the responsibilities listed in their job descriptions are completed in a timely and satisfactory manner, including assurance of accuracy.
- Conduct Performance Management reviews with all Direct Reports in accordance with the corporate Performance Management System.
- Assume additional tasks that are assigned by the manager, or which are logically inherent to this position.
- Ensure that all duties this position and those of team members reporting to this position, are carried out incompliance with Alterman’s stated mission, vision, values, safety standards, and company policies and procedures.
- Work with the Director of Water/Wastewater to identify "critical path activities" of this position and, when directed, prepare documentation of the major processes required to accomplish these activities and submit to manager for final approval. Once approved, ensure that other staff members, as identified by manager, understand the process and can provide adequate back-up for these "critical path" activities. Review documentation on an annual basis and make necessary adjustments to reflect current processes.
- Communicate information concerning operations to the Director of Water/Wastewater and other managers so that all parties to have a full understanding of overall project operations.
- Actively pursue and generate business opportunities and cultivate relationships with both existing and potential customers, while ensuring complete customer satisfaction.
- Maintain vendor relationships that enhance and protect the corporation's position, while working within both the company's policies and the current legal standards. This includes taking necessary precautions to avoid situations that could be construed as a conflict of interest or that could be deemed to be sufficient to unduly influence the employee's ability to make prudent decisions that are in the best interest of the corporation. If there are any questions concerning a specific situation, the employee's participation is to be approved in advance by the manager of this position.
- Be willing to put in the effort that is necessary to ensure that job duties are performed completely and accurately.
Desired Education and / or Experience Level:
- Inside Wireman Apprenticeship Completion or similar/equivalent.
- Associate Degree in Business Management, Construction Management or Construction Engineering, or similar relevant hands-on experience.
- 2 years' experience in field supervisory position
- 5 years' experience in a project management position, including estimating and project engineering, and internal control assignments.
- 6 years working and studying in the electrical construction industry.
Beyond the desired education level listed above, this position requires continuous education in area directly related to this position. These hours, courses, training or certifications are to be approved by the employee's department manager before attending classes in order to be accepted under this plan.
Necessary Skills:
- Capable user of accounting software program (project manager features).
- Capable user of Primavera or project schedule in use.
- Capable of reading, interpreting and understanding all contract documents, plans, specs and requirements.
- Solid/basic knowledge of:
- National Electric Code
- Electrical engineering concepts/fundamentals
- Purchasing and buying
- Accounting
- MS word/ excel / outlook.
- Conest program and change orders.
- Working knowledge of trade terms, material, methods, codes, contract, and specification language as well as bidding methods.

- The ability to successfully manage multiple customers, accounts, or multiple projects at one time or one significant larger project that is an anchor project for the company.
Job Environment
Must be able to withstand high requirements for manual dexterity associated with computer data entry. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hand or fingers to handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to sit. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; climb or balance; and stoop kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and depth perception. While this position is primarily internally based, candidates must be able to maneuver and manipulate in a construction atmosphere without jeopardizing their safety or that of others.
