The Opportunity: Manager of Training & Instructional Design
This role will own and lead the comprehensive strategy, design, and deployment of all training programs across our field operations and Store Support Center (SSC). You will lead a team of talented L&D professionals, partnering closely with senior leadership, Operations, and HR to cultivate a culture of continuous learning that directly translates into measurable business outcomes and a strong leadership pipeline.
Key Responsibilities
I. Training Strategy & Alignment
Develop and Execute Strategy: Create and lead the holistic RaceTrac training strategy, ensuring alignment with company growth goals, operational priorities, and cultural values.
Curriculum Leadership: Build and maintain comprehensive curriculum plans for every level of the organization (Associates, Shift Leaders, Managers, Directors, etc.), incorporating best practices and stakeholder input.
Stakeholder Collaboration: Partner with senior leaders, Field Operations, and HR to identify organizational capability gaps and define targeted training solutions that build professional development and organizational bench strength.
Resource Management: Manage training priorities, budgets, resource allocation, and performance monitoring to ensure efficient use of resources and maximum impact.
II. Instructional Design Leadership
Team Management: Lead, mentor, and coach the instructional design team to create highly engaging and effective learning experiences across multiple modalities (eLearning, VILT, in-person, blended).
Modern Design Focus: Drive the integration of modern instructional design methods, including microlearning, gamification, simulations, and scenario-based learning, ensuring training aligns with RaceTrac's brand and guest service culture.
Performance Transfer: Ensure learning translates directly into on-the-job application and measurable performance improvement, driving consistency across the enterprise.
III. Implementation & Field Execution
Field Training Oversight: Lead and coach the implementation team, overseeing the successful execution of all training programs, including standardized New Store Opening (NSO) training.
Partnership & Accountability: Collaborate with Regional Directors and operations leaders to ensure clear standards, support, and accountability for training execution in the field.
Data-Driven Improvement: Utilize data, results, and performance metrics to evaluate program effectiveness, identify performance gaps, and continuously refine training content and delivery.
Talent Pipeline: Assist in qualifying and developing high-potential leaders to strengthen the internal talent pipeline.
Responsibilities:
Develop RaceTrac Training Strategy
Engage appropriate levels of leadership in training strategy, leadership development needs, and approaches to support company growth.
Build curriculum plans for every level of the organization, leveraging input from store teams, SSC leaders, and external best practices.
Lead the development and deployment of training programs for field and SSC roles (Associates, Shift Leaders, Managers, Directors, etc.).
Oversee the management of the learning management system (LMS) and ensure training deployment is measured for effectiveness.
Create and manage training priorities to support company needs, including resource planning, budget management, and performance monitoring.
Collaborate with key stakeholders (field operations, SSC teams, HR) to ensure organizational needs are defined and addressed with targeted training solutions.
Partner with HR to ensure team members are professionally developed and that bench strength is cultivated for future leadership roles.
Lead Instructional Design Team
Manage and coach instructional designers to create engaging training that meets business needs.
Ensure training experiences are aligned with RaceTrac’s brand, guest service culture, and operational standards.
Incorporate modern instructional design methods, including microlearning, simulations, gamification, and scenario-based learning.
Translate training events into on-the-job application, ensuring learning transfers into performance improvement.
Partner with SMEs and external resources as needed to design and deliver high-quality, innovative content.
Drive consistency and alignment in training content across the enterprise.
Lead Implementation Team
Staff and coach the implementation team to ensure training standards are met or exceeded in the field.
Oversee new store opening (NSO) training programs and ensure consistent rollout across locations.
Partner with Regional Directors and operations leaders to provide clarity, support, and accountability for training execution.
Use data and results to drive improvements, adjusting training programs where performance gaps are identified.
Assist in qualifying and developing high-potential leaders to strengthen the talent pipeline.
Partner cross-functionally to align training priorities with business strategies and initiatives.
Qualifications:
Required Skills & Experience
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Design, Adult Learning, Human Resources, or a related field required.
Experience: 5–8 years of progressive training and Learning & Development experience in a retail, service, or multi-unit environment.
Leadership: 3+ years in a management role leading training or L&D professionals.
Technical Proficiency: Strong expertise in LMS platforms and eLearning authoring tools (e.g., Articulate, Rise, Adobe Suite).
Core Competencies:
Strategic Thinker with the ability to connect training outcomes to measurable business impact.
Exceptional communication and facilitation skills with proven ability to influence all organizational levels.
Strong project and process management skills to execute large-scale initiatives.
Travel: Ability to travel up to 25% as needed.
