Girl Scouts of Oregon and Southwest Washington is looking for a dynamic Communications Manager who shares our vision of helping Girl Scouts change the world. We're looking for a skilled team leader who can coach and support a multidisciplinary Communications team in achieving our council’s strategic membership, program, and fundraising goals.
What You'll Do
As the Communications Manager, you’ll lead the Communications team in close partnership with the Vice President of Marketing and Communications, overseeing both staff and project management. You’ll collaborate with other departments to ensure the timely delivery of high-quality communications support aligned with the organization’s strategy and mission. The Communications Manager is also responsible for sourcing content, writing, editing, and producing clear and engaging communications to advance the fundraising and membership goals of Girl Scouts of Oregon and Southwest Washington. This role will also support and serve as a backup for the other communications functions of the team.
Responsibilities
In addition to the supervisory responsibilities described above, this position is responsible for specialized communications that advance our council’s fundraising and membership growth goals. These include:
- Works closely with the VP-Marketing and Communications and department colleagues to develop communication strategies that advance the council’s overall fundraising and membership growth goals.
- Collaborates with Fund Development and Communications colleagues to develop annual donor stewardship communication plans for various giving levels.
- Drafts and edits effective fundraising content, including but not limited to direct mail, email, and social media communications, print collateral, website copy, and other donor acknowledgments.
- Collaborates with Community Engagement and Communications colleagues to develop or customize integrated membership marketing campaigns.
- Collaborates with Graphic Designer and Social Media Specialist to ensure comprehensive interactive social media coverage, specifically on topics related to fundraising and membership growth, and others as assigned.
- Develops and maintains a working partnership with cross-departmental colleagues and volunteers that encourages the exchange of public relations and marketing opportunities, capitalizes on local knowledge, and positively promotes Girl Scouts.
- Frequently participates in staff and volunteer-led events and troop activities to source compelling, diverse multimedia content and member and donor stories.
- Prepares content for inclusion in donor communications and membership materials, including but not limited to basic photo and video editing, writing, and copyediting.
- Maintains and applies expert knowledge of Girl Scout brand and fundraising communication best practices, and working knowledge of membership recruitment best practices to inform resource development.
- Exercises discretion and judgment, maintaining confidentiality regarding donor giving.
- Participates in the council’s strategic planning and budgeting process as it relates to the area of work.
- Participates in department, organizational, and regional council events that occur outside of regular office hours (occasional day and overnight travel
required).

- At least eight (8) years of total relevant education and experience, including:
- Staff supervision of teams with two (2) or more direct reports.
- At least three (3) years’ experience in fundraising communications/marketing or a related field.
- Professional writing, marketing, and communications experience.
- Project management.
- Preferred: Nonprofit organizations.
- Strong leadership skills.
- Project management and organizational skills.
- Strong relationship-building skills. Adept at collaborating and fostering partnerships.
- Strong communication skills, including public speaking, small group discussion leading, one-on-ones, and phone and email communication.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Cultural competence and ability to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and abilities.
- Thoughtful and tactful under pressure.
- Computer and technology proficiency, including Microsoft 365.
- Experience aggregating and analyzing data.
- Able to work independently and take initiative.
- Able to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings, weekends, and occasional overnight trips.
- Able to facilitate meetings and events in person and virtually.
- Reliable transportation and ability to travel to meetings and events across Oregon and Southwest Washington. Able to transport materials and equipment to/from events.
The Details
- Compensation – Exempt, starting at $60,000-$72,000 annually, depending on qualifications. Plus $2,600 annually for Spanish language skills at a conversational level or higher.
- Benefits – We offer health, dental, and life insurance, paid time off, and paid holidays. We also provide

- Hours – Full-time, business hours, with some flexibility. Occasional event attendance, including weekends and evenings.
- Location - Regular job duties may be performed remotely if you meet internet connectivity standards or at one of our Service Centers throughout Oregon. All staff must participate in in-person meetings, events, work assignments, and retreats, with the frequency and location determined by business needs. You must be a resident of Oregon or SW Washington.
