ELS is hiring for the position of Specialist - Tax in Chicago, Illinois.

What you'll do:

The Sales Tax Analyst is responsible for ensuring accurate and timely compliance with multi-state and local sales tax regulations. This role prepares and files monthly sales tax returns and provides support to the Sales Tax Manager in audits and special projects. The role also involves researching applicable tax laws and corresponding with taxing authorities, as necessary.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Compile and review monthly, quarterly, and annual tax data for all locations to calculate tax liabilities across various state and local jurisdictions.
  • Complete all required steps to generate monthly sales tax data files for submission to the external sales tax service provider.
  • Prepare and file in-house sales tax returns accurately and in accordance with filing deadlines.
  • Maintain and update the sales tax calendar and notice log to ensure timely compliance and tracking.
  • Monitor the sales tax group inbox and respond promptly to internal and external inquiries, including the preparation of resale certificates and IRS Form W-9.
  • Collaborate on the development and enhancement of procedures related to both outsourced and in-house sales tax filings.
  • Conduct research on sales tax matters and provide guidance to property teams as questions arise.
  • Partner with the property accounting department to determine tax liabilities and assist with reconciliations of sales tax payable accounts.
  • Support sales tax audits by gathering and reviewing purchase documentation and generating relevant financial reports, including trial balances and general ledger extracts.
  • Serve as a point of contact for property teams regarding sales tax issues, procedures, rates, and other related matters.
  • Review and respond to sales tax notices to ensure timely resolution.
  • Assist with the registration and renewal of tax permits.

SKILLS, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting.
  • 1-3 years’ experience working with sales tax compliance.
  • Excellent Excel skills include a proven track record with pivot tables, v-lookups, and other advanced Excel skills.
  • Detailed-oriented, excellent organizational, time management and project management skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.

    Estimated compensation for this position in the states of BC, CA, CO, IL, MA, MD, MN, NJ, NY, VT and WA is:

    Annual Salary: $60,000.00 - $62,000.00

    The salary listed is an estimate and not guaranteed. A salary offer will vary based on applicant’s education, experience, skills, abilities, geographic location, internal equity and alignment with market data. In addition to the base pay and our benefits, some positions are eligible for bonuses, sales commissions, or incentive pay.
