The Systems Administrator position presupposes strong analytical skills, understanding of technology infrastructure, ability to analyze and interpret information, and ability to work with cross-functional teams and to communicate with various constituencies. Overall, the Systems Administrator will support cutting-edge high-performance computing (HPC) cluster and modern cloud infrastructure systems. The Enterprise Data and Analytics (EDA) Division technology infrastructure offers a multitude of high-touch, value-added, turnkey solutions that span Cloud Computing, Compliance, Cybersecurity, Big Data, Analytics and Data Science in medical and non-medical areas. The Systems Administrator will install, support, and maintain HPC systems that support these advanced education and research solutions. The Systems Administrator will also ensure that all non-functional requirements (performance, scalability, security, usability, etc.) are met.

  • Install and maintain Meharry high-performance computing (HPC) cluster including data storage solutions, authentication server(s) and applications.
  • Ensure backup copies of all files are routinely made and securely stored and contribute to development and management of a disaster recovery plan for systems as well as data recovery plan.
  • Maintain HPC servers utilizing Cluster management tools and workload management. Install and maintain job schedular e.g. SLURUM.
  • Ensure the integrity and security of enterprise data on both inhouse and hosted computers, multiple databases, and during data transfer in accordance with Meharry’s and EDA Data Governance Policy and industry best-practices regarding privacy, security, and regulatory compliance.
  • Manage user accounts, permissions, access rights, and storage allocations in accordance with EDA Data Governance Policy and Stewardship, and best practices regarding privacy, security, and regulatory compliance.
  • Prepare and provide manual, and documentation for users. Do users onboarding and timely do trouble shootings issues with serving aptitude. Train Meharry users regularly.
  • Provide technical support in all areas, including security, business partner coordination, data infrastructure asset maintenance, and Active Directory identity management to expand the capability and performance of system processes and configurations for a Supercomputer.
  • Work closely with the EDA staff, Office of Information Technology (OIT) staff to manage all aspects of computer systems, HPC software systems, servers, networking and connections, and application programming to ensure high levels of availability with up-to-date system, and security of the supported business applications needed to support the advanced data science and AI research program.
  • Responsible for making technical recommendations related to computing hardware, network components (switches, routers, etc.), operating systems and software architectures.
  • General knowledge of other areas of data infrastructure and technology. Thorough understanding of and experience with systems-related issues and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance. 95%

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
Exhibit technical mastery of system internals, network security, database and operating systems, emerging
cluster computing technologies and architectures and the interrelationship of all.
Experience in cross-platform OS and application integration (Linux/Windows). Operational knowledge of
office365 administration, LINUX, SUSE, and Windows Server operating systems. Office 365 support/admin
experience (Office, Exchange, SharePoint, Teams, etc.)
Experience in high-performance computing (HPC) administration is considered advantageous.
Experience and/or working knowledge of cluster management and job scheduling tools is preferred.

Experience and/or working knowledge of regulations, systems management protocols and compliant
requirements including expertise designing and implementing controls compliant with Health Insurance
Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA), and NIST
Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI).
Working experience with network and routing protocols.
Linux system administration experience using the command line; experience with RHEL/CentOS is a plus
Advanced experience writing and editing complex scripts used to perform system maintenance and
administration. Advanced programming and/or scripting skills in Python or Perl, Ruby, Java and PowerShell
scripting languages.
Organizing and coordinating skills.
Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart confidential information.
Cognizant of ethical concerns balancing data privacy and usability in relation to protecting and supporting
underserved and exploited populations
Ability to develop and deliver presentations.
Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing

Education and Experience Required:
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Security,
Engineering, or a related technical field, with 2 years of relevant experience.
