Central Biotechnology Services (CBS; www.cardiff.ac.uk/central-biotechnology-services) is an ISO 9001:2015 certified and Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP) accredited Cardiff University Core Technology Facility. CBS provides user access and fully managed services for Cardiff University researchers and colleagues from other academic institutions, the NHS, start-ups, SMEs and corporate companies. Technology areas include flow cytometry, bioimaging, gene expression, bioinformatics and protein analysis.
We are seeking to appoint an individual with expertise in flow cytometry experimentation and specifically cell sorting during a period of staff absence due to maternity leave, to work within CBS.
The postholder will provide technological expertise, technological services and project management for a wide range of research and contract projects in CBS.

This post is full-time (35 hours per week), is fixed term for nine months and is available immediately and is based at Heath Park.
Salary: £41,064 - £46,049 per annum (Grade 6)
Appointments to roles at Cardiff University are usually made at bottom of scale unless in exceptional circumstances.

Job Description
Key Duties
- Provide professional advice and guidance on Flow Cytometry, Cell Sorting processes and procedures to internal and external customers that will have institute wide impacts, using judgement and creativity to suggest the most appropriate course of action where appropriate, and ensuring complex and conceptual issues are understood
- Take responsibility for resolving issues independently within The Flow Cytometry Facility where they fall within set role objectives
- Investigate and analysis specific issues within Flow Cytometry and Cell Sorting, creating recommendation reports, supported by advances within Flow Cytometry
- Ensure that the provision of Flow Cytometry and Cell Sorting is delivered to the institution, proactively changing the delivery according to customer requirements
- Establish working relationships with key contacts, developing appropriate communication links with the University’s Schools/Directorates and outside bodies as required
- Create specific working groups from colleagues across the University to achieve school objectives
- Plan and deliver specific small scale projects, co-ordinating and supervising project teams created as needed
- Develop and deliver training on Flow Cytometry and Cell Sorting
- Undertake a variety of administrative duties to support the department
- Instruct and guide other employees across the University within Flow Cytometry and Cell Sorting
- Ensure ISO 9001:2015 compliance whilst undertaking all CBS duties and Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP)/Good Clinical Practice (GCP) compliance where required.
- Ensure that an understanding of the importance of confidentiality is applied when undertaking all duties

Qualifications and Education
- Degree/NVQ 4 or equivalent Professional membership/experience
- Substantial experience of working within flow cytometry (including cell sorting)
- Able to demonstrate professional knowledge within flow cytometry (including cell sorting)
- Proven experience in developing new processes and procedures
- Ability to communicate conceptually detailed and complex information effectively and professionally with a wide range of people
- Evidence of ability to explore customers’ needs and adapt the service accordingly to ensure a quality service is delivered
- Proven ability to develop networks in order to contribute to long term developments
- Evidence of ability to solve expansive problems using initiative and creativity; identify and propose both practical and innovative solutions
- Evidence of demonstrable knowledge of key advances within Flow Cytometry and Cell Sorting
- Evidence of ability to undertake and deliver specific projects and supervise short term project team
- Postgraduate/Professional qualification
- Experience of working in a Higher Education environment
- Fluency in Welsh, written and oral
