PROGRAM OVERVIEW
EMS Corps is a 5-month EMT training program for young people who have had to navigate under-resourced public systems, insecure housing, system involvement and other challenges.
In addition to EMT training, corps members receive a monthly stipend, wrapping around support, mentorship, career guidance and job placement after they graduate. El Proyecto del Barrio will oversee San Bernardino EMS Corps. The program will run three 20-week cohorts.
JOB SUMMARY
The EMS Trainer will support the San Bernardino EMS Corps training program by working to ensure it meets the key performance metrics outlined in the grant agreement between El Proyecto and California Employment Development Department. Specifically, they will supplement the EMT instruction provided by Crafton College, provide mentorship to program participants and liaison with employer partners in private ambulance, allied health and fire/rescue.
This position will be supported by El Proyecto WIOA San Bernardino Site Staff(s).
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
The EMS Trainer will be primarily responsible for:
- Working closely with Crafton College to ensure supplemental instruction aligns with their course syllabus.
- Running the EMS Lab on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 1PM - 4:30pm.
- Translating participants learning prescriptions to individual study plans.
- Offering 1:1 tutoring as needed.
- Preparing participant Performance Improvement Plans as necessary for review by the Program Administrator.
- Conduct bi-weekly check-ins with each student to understand strengths and gaps in their skills and knowledge, set goals and monitor progress toward them, identify barriers to success and how to move around them.
- Offer guidance and mentorship as participants prepare for clinicals, the EMT national registry exam (NREMT) and job interviews.
The EMS Trainer will also support the following aspects of the program:
Planning and Capacity Building
- Assist in onboarding and training other staff and partners.
- Collaborate with program stakeholders and the PWA Implementation Lead to adapt/evolve the program model based on local factors.
- Execute a workplan to ensure a successful program launch that follows the process outlined by PWA and California EDD.
Recruitment, Application Review and Interview Process
- Lead the application review, interview, and selection process.
Operational Execution and Oversight
- Support the day-to-day operations of the program.
- Lead regular team meetings with instructors from Crafton Hills College and El Proyecto to ensure team members are effectively contributing and supporting each other and the program goals.
- Lead orientation.
- Track demerits and effectively communicate them to students and staff.
- Work with staff to modify and distribute membership handbook and weekly schedule.
- Serve as a liaison between El Proyecto, PWA and other program partners.
- Coordinate mentoring component.
- Help build relationships with employers.
Student Experience and Engagement
- Regularly connect with students to lift successes, understand challenges and ensure they have the support they need.
- Maintain a regular presence in all program components – in the classroom, at wrap around supports as appropriate and during community service opportunities.
- Track student performance in coursework and proactively offer support as needed.
Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
- Experience connecting with and supporting young people who have had to navigate challenges including insecure housing and system involvement.
- Familiarity with the challenges and barriers faced by the young people EMS Corps will serve.
- Ability to quickly connect with young people.
- Knowledge of the local community and resources and partners relevant to the young people EMS Corps seeks to serve.
- Excellent communications skills include the ability to effectively collaborate with a team.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously.
- Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- Associate’s degree or equivalent OR a combination of education and related work experience.
- A minimum of 3 years working in EMS.
- A minimum of an Advanced EMT certification.
- An NAEMT certified instructor.
CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSURE / LANGUAGE
- Trained in Jones & Bartlett’s EMT Flipped Classroom Curriculum used by EMS Corps.
- Must provide proof of required vaccinations by federal, state, and local funding sources.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
- Employees driving personal vehicles for El Proyecto business must provide El Proyecto proof of a valid driving license, and auto liability insurance.
- El Proyecto will reimburse employees for their mileage at the current rate set by the Internal Revenue Service. To receive mileage reimbursement, the employee must log their mileage and submit the mileage expense report to their Appropriate Administrator.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Walking, talking, sitting, bending, stooping, and lifting up to 20 pounds; hand and wrist dexterity to utilize a computer.
