PURPOSE

GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is a federal grant program administered by the U.S. Department of Education designed to create partnerships between targeted schools in low-income communities and colleges/universities in order to work with students beginning in the middle school grades and increase college-going rates among low-income youth.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university
  • Two (2) years’ experience working with students or families in an educational, social service or related environment.
  • Understanding of federal GEAR UP grant program
  • Knowledge of child growth/development and academic/career counseling techniques
  • Valid Indiana Driver’s license

  

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Provide oversight for six (6) GEAR UP Middle School Student Advisors, who will be responsible for ensuring the GEAR UP Program is implemented and sustained with fidelity
  • Assist the Director of College and Career Readiness and School Counseling with all GEAR UP programming
  • Manage district GEAR UP data aligned with federal guidelines
  • Provide support to the GEAR UP Student Advisors to engage FWCS students and families in GEAR UP programming, college and career visits, internships and job shadowing opportunities, and meeting postsecondary college and career goals
  • Oversee all recruiting and planning of summer programs, events and workshops
  • Oversee all 12-month planning and develop and implement data informed programming aligned to the GEAR UP objectives
  • Oversee the recruitment of students to participate in college and career visits based on Standard for Success and Naviance data
  • Responsible for increasing the academic performance and preparation for postsecondary education of students
  • Responsible for increasing the rate of high school graduation and participation in postsecondary education
  • Responsible for increasing the educational expectation for participating students
  • Support the work of increasing family knowledge of postsecondary education options, preparation and financing
  • Responsible for assisting with developing sustainable structures and systems that support GEAR UP and college and career readiness initiatives.
  • Responsible for scheduling GEAR UP workshops, college and career fairs, college and career visits, internship and job shadowing opportunities
  • Serve as a liaison between colleges and universities as it relates to college visit and college fair opportunities for the GEAR UP Fort Wayne Program and College and Career Readiness
  • Serve as a liaison between the businesses and organizations as it relates to internship and job shadowing opportunities, career visits and career fairs for the GEAR UP Fort Wayne Program and College and Career Readiness
  • Collaborate with Director of College and Career Readiness and School Counseling to plan and organize college and career activities, programs and parent academies
  • Responsible for overseeing the GEAR UP social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter)
  • Responsible for preparing and maintaining a variety of detailed records and reports
  • Responsible for completion of mandated reports
  • Responsible for submitting all necessary reports and documents to the Director of College and Career Readiness and School Counseling in accordance with established timelines and requirements

  • Flexibility: Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, or crouch to perform specific duties.
  • Visual Acuity: Close vision ability with the capacity to adjust focus.
  • Mobility: Freedom to sit or walk at will throughout the work environment.
  • Strength and Stamina: Capability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to twenty-five (25) pounds or more.
  • Outdoor Work: Tolerance of work outside in various weather conditions.
