Basic Function

The Director of Sanitation will lead the development, maintenance, and training for the sanitation and pest control programs across all Algood Food Company facilities.  The role will ensure compliance with all company, regulatory, and customer standards for sanitation and food safety by working collaboratively to ensure that equipment, processes, and the plant environment are suitably designed, maintained, and effectively cleaned/sanitized.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement strategic sanitation plans for all Algood Food Company facilities to ensure that sanitary performance meets Algood standards as well as regulatory and customer requirements.
  • Develop, review, and update Master Sanitation Schedule and Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures as needed to maintain best practices.
  • Lead production, sanitation, and maintenance personnel to effectively and safely complete production and facility sanitation; collaborate with plant management to lead sanitation activities on planned Sanitation Days (regardless of assigned employee/ department).
  • Plan and organize training activities related to sanitation and pest management:
    • Train all plant employees on sanitation procedures and chemical safety / use; and
    • Organize and conduct refresher training annually, or as needed.
  • Coach and develop sanitation employees to meet company, department, and individual performance goals.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional project teams to evaluate new/modified equipment and facility construction to ensure sanitary design requirements are met.
  • Continually evaluate sanitary conditions to recommend improvements to processes, equipment, and facilities.
  • Develop and maintain Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and other related sanitation metrics to measure sanitary conditions and performance.  Review and analyze data sanitation KPIs and metrics, internal and external audits, and environmental monitoring program to identify trends and implement corrective/preventive actions.
  • Oversee and coordinate contractors providing waste removal, recycling, pest management, chemical management, and supplemental sanitation services. 

 

Travel

This position requires regular travel to the Lawrenceburg facility, and less than 25% travel outside of the local area for other business needs.

  • Ability to manipulate necessary office equipment, computer software, hardware, and equipment. 

 

Working Environment and Conditions

This position requires working in an internal and external environment that is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, extreme heat, and the risk of electrical shock, and occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, high precarious places, and toxic or caustic chemicals.  Additionally, this position requires availability to handle urgent issues outside of normal working hours due to 24-hour production schedules.

Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Food Science, Microbiology, or related field. 
  • 10 years experience in food safety and sanitation.  Nut butter and/or dry processing experience preferred. 
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong knowledge of sanitary design, food safety, and sanitation chemical use and safety. 
  • PCQI / HACCP certification required; SQF certification preferred.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office suite and an understanding of other software, web-based applications, and internet search functions.
  • Internal auditor training required.
