Job Description:
Position Salary Range: $70,000 - $75,000
ASU Environmental Health and Safety seeks a dedicated Environmental Professional to support and enhance the university’s environmental compliance programs. The role is responsible for coordinating compliance and monitoring activities to conform to environmental regulations. The successful candidate will provide expert consultation, conduct audits, review project designs, deliver training, manage data, and provide recommendations for environmental strategies. This position will serve on the Emergency Response Team, responding to spills and material releases. Acts as a technical advisor, offering guidance on environmental compliance and best practices.
This position will be located at the ASU Research Park in Tempe, AZ; travel and support to other campuses will be required as needed
Essential Duties:
Conduct site audits assess compliance with federal, state, local, and university environmental regulations.
Develop and implement environmental programs aligned with university goals.
Communicate findings of audits and inspections and recommendations.
Develop and submit accurate environmental and safety reports to regulatory agencies.
Respond to environmental incidents and develop corrective actions.
Review construction plans to confirm environmental compliance.
Provide guidance on the safe handling of hazardous materials, including gas, chemical, and other substances.
Evaluate and improve compliance methodologies and performance indicators.
Collaborate with stakeholders regarding environmental issues and solutions.
Maintain and manage data for accurate records of emissions and chemical inventories.
Support industrial hygiene, life safety, and fire safety initiatives as needed.
Lead special projects and studies as assigned.
Design and deliver education and outreach programs, as needed.
Participate in emergency drills and real-time responses as part of the facility Emergency Response Team.
Desired Qualifications:
Understanding of semiconductor research process, tools, and chemicals.
Cleanroom experience.
Expertise in areas such as:
Air, wastewater, and/or stormwater management
Spill prevention and countermeasures (SPCC)
RCRA
Handling chemicals, gases, and hazardous waste
Tier II reporting
Environmental due diligence
Experience conducting audits, advising stakeholders, and delivering training.
Certifications such as:
40-hr HazWoper.
Underground Storage Tank Operator.
Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA)
Dust Control Training.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities.
In-depth knowledge of environmental regulations and compliance practices.
Understanding of hazardous materials management, chemical compatibility, and safety protocols.
Ability to work independently and collaborate to resolve EHS issues.
Familiarity with semiconductor research laboratory operations.
Ability to collect environmental samples and utilize monitoring equipment.
Ability to apply logical and scientific thinking principles to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw accurate conclusions.
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
Effective relationship-building and problem-solving abilities.
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to mediate and resolve team conflict.
Capacity to influence behavioral change for university goals.
Ability to use enterprise systems and computer programs.
Working Environment:
Office-based with periods of computer use.
Outdoor fieldwork and non-climate-controlled environments, including confined spaces.
Cleanroom environments.
Physical activity, including bending, lifting (up to 35 lbs), and walking on uneven terrain.
Exposure to extreme weather conditions and hazardous materials.
Participation in respiratory protection and medical surveillance programs.
Occasional on-call duty and may include nights and weekends.
