Are you passionate about helping children thrive in and out of the water? We’re looking for enthusiastic, compassionate, and motivated individuals to join our team as Special Services Swim Instructors!
Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Aquatics Leadership Team, Special Services Swim Instructors provide direct, individualized instruction and leadership for children with special needs in a 1-on-1 swim lesson setting. Instructors will tailor their teaching approach to meet each child’s unique abilities while promoting water safety, confidence, and skill development.
Essential Functions:
- Provides individualized swim instruction for children with physical, cognitive, or developmental needs in accordance with Lakeland Hills YMCA guidelines.
- Builds supportive, authentic relationships with swimmers and their parents/guardians. Maintains effective, positive relations with members, participants, and staff.
- Delivers safe, adaptive swim instruction in the water for the full duration of each lesson.
- Demonstrates patience, creativity, and flexibility in modifying lesson plans and communication strategies to meet each swimmer’s needs.
- Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and emergency procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary and notifies the Aquatics Leadership Team.
- Prepares and maintains all necessary equipment for lessons and reports any damaged equipment to the supervisor.
- Must be attentive and ready at all times to prevent injuries and respond to safety concerns.
Qualifications
- Must have experience working with children with special needs in a recreational, educational, or therapeutic setting.
- Must be a confident, competent swimmer able to instruct safely in the water.
- Ability to demonstrate and teach freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and basic aquatic skills, with adaptations as needed.
- Must maintain a positive and supportive attitude toward students, parents, and staff.
- Must be at least 16 years of age.
