The Science, Technology and Environmental Studies program at Butler University invites applications for a lecturer in Environmental Studies. Our program seeks a flexible and dynamic teacher with a global vision of environmental studies to help build our innovative international degree program, Butler Overseas. Students in this three-year program will combine three summers of instruction at Butler’s Indianapolis campus with six semesters of study abroad across five continents. The lecturer would be based in Indianapolis and teach some courses online to students who are abroad, and other courses in-person, in fall, spring and summer terms. The lecturer would have the opportunity to travel with students to some of their study-abroad locations. Some of their teaching will serve students in Butler’s standard four-year program.
This is a 12-month, non-tenure-track position with an initial two-year contract and the expectation of continuing appointment. The teaching load is 27 hours annually spread across fall, spring and summer semesters, with the possibility of limited teaching load reductions for administrative work associated with Butler Overseas. This is a teaching position with no contractual expectation of research or scholarship. The anticipated start date for this position is August 2026. Butler cannot provide visa sponsorship for this position.
Candidates are expected to have completed a PhD in environmental science, environmental studies, or an adjacent discipline prior to appointment. A successful candidate will be an experienced teacher with broad training in environmental science and environmental studies, who can teach a variety of courses and is committed to engaging students in both in-person and online modalities. Teaching competence in introductory laboratory-based environmental science is required.
Other desirable teaching areas include topical courses in environmental science, environmental studies, and sustainability, especially courses with a global focus, and courses that teach or use GIS. Experience in global education is desirable, as is experience in supporting undergraduate research, internships, and other engaged learning strategies. We value candidates who share our commitment to engagement and inclusion of students, faculty, and staff with diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences.
