About the Department

Maintains, services, programs, operates, installs, and repairs Park and Tennis/Pickleball Complex irrigation systems. Maintains, installs, and repairs drainage systems. Coordinates with personnel and outside contractors any activity that affects irrigation/drainage performance or would cause damage to underground components. Applies chemicals, fertilizers, and waters them in as directed by the Athletics Director. Performs other duties as required.


Position Duties

  1. Programs and operates irrigation as directed by the Athletics Director.
  2. Maintains an inventory of irrigation supplies and fills out requests for replacement of needed parts and supplies.
  3. Report irregularities of Park and Tennis/Pickleball Complex conditions to the supervisor.
  4. Maintains a clean and organized shop area in accordance with regulations.
  5. Repairs areas by seeding, plugging, grading, sodding, topdressing, aerating, soil testing, and other tasks as required by the manager.
  6. Operates spreading, spraying, and mowing equipment.
  7. Assists in the maintenance and planting of ornamental plantings.
  8. Plans for special projects involving irrigation or drainage.
  9. Maintains all aspects of the irrigation system at the Tennis/Pickleball Complex.
  10. Performs spot spraying and application of chemicals as assigned.
  11. Performs routine safety inspections and calibrations on spraying and fertilizing equipment.
  12. Performs other duties as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Valid Driver's license.
  2. High school graduate or GED with related courses beyond high school level.
  3. Minimum 1-year experience in irrigation or plumbing.
  4. Must have a valid Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries Commercial Applicator permit or ability to obtain within one (1) year of employment.

Other Qualifications

  1. Ability to work in adverse weather conditions (wet, muddy, hot, cold, etc.).
  2. Ability to follow written or oral instructions.
  3. Knowledge of basic electricity, plumbing, and surveying techniques.
  4. Ability to deal with the public in a tactful and respectful manner.
  5. Some knowledge of electricity and hydraulics related to irrigation, valves, controllers, computers, pumps, and pumping systems.
Supervision:
This position reports to the Athletic Director. Works independently with minimum supervision.

Physical Demands (with or without accommodations):
  1. Prolonged standing, walking, sitting, bending, stretching, and twisting.
  2. Transport and/or apply heavy materials, such as fertilizers.
  3. Climb, push, pull, stoop, lying on ground.
  4. Work ditch or trench.
  5. Ability to lift and carry at least 50 pounds.

Telephone, computer, hand tools, power tools, riding lawn mower, push mowers, weed eaters, tractors, trucks, chainsaws, stump grinders, welder, torches, air compressor, loader/backhoe, hand sprayers, spreaders, aerifiers, voltmeter, ammeter, trickster, sod cutter, sprinklers, dump truck, blowers, steam cleaner, out-front rotary mower, reel mower, grinders, battery charger, automatic levels, ladders, parts washer, drag mats, buffer, trash pump, forklift, hand held radio, trap rake, trenchers, material handlers, and top dresser.
