This onsite position is based in Sumner, Iowa, where you will collaborate with engineering, production, and quality teams to ensure our vehicles meet rigorous industry standards while supporting our dealer network.
Position Summary
The Manufacturing Engineer – Electrical Assembly plays a key role in supporting daily production operations and ensuring that all electrical assembly processes in ambulance manufacturing are efficient, repeatable, and compliant with quality standards.
This position works directly on the production floor to troubleshoot wiring and electrical issues, improve assembly methods, train technicians, and drive process standardization. The ideal candidate is a hands-on problem solver who thrives in a fast-paced manufacturing environment, balancing immediate production support with long-term process improvement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Production Support and Troubleshooting
- Serve as the primary engineering contact for production on electrical assembly issues.
- Provide immediate hands-on assistance to resolve wiring, component installation, and system integration problems during vehicle builds.
- Work closely with supervisors, team leads, and assemblers to minimize downtime and rework.
- Support production teams in diagnosing and resolving electrical assembly issues during vehicle builds.
- Collaborate with electrical design engineers to resolve wiring or component integration challenges.
Process Design and Standardization
- Develop and maintain standardized work instructions, visual aids, and process sheets for all electrical assembly operations.
- Evaluate and refine wiring harness routing, component installation, and system testing processes for consistency and efficiency.
- Work with design engineering to ensure manufacturability of new products and design changes.
Quality and Compliance
- Ensure all electrical assemblies meet quality and safety standards.
- Partner with Quality Assurance to identify and correct recurring electrical defects.
- Develop and implement error-proofing solutions (poka-yoke) to prevent assembly issues.
- Support audits and maintain accurate production and process records.
Continuous Improvement and Training
- Lead Kaizen and 5S initiatives within the electrical assembly area.
- Use root-cause analysis and data-driven problem-solving to reduce scrap, rework, and downtime.
- Collaborate with Production and Training teams to develop and deliver training on proper wiring, crimping, and testing methods.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
- 3–7 years of experience in a manufacturing environment, ideally in vehicle or specialty vehicle production (ambulance, fire truck, RV, etc.).
- Strong understanding of 12V/24V DC systems, wiring harnesses, and vehicle electrical integration.
- Proficient in CAD software (AutoCAD Electrical, SolidWorks Electrical, or equivalent).
- Hands-on experience with Lean manufacturing, process mapping, and continuous improvement tools.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with production personnel at all levels.
