About the Department

Alabama State University, Upward Bound Program, invites applications to fill the position of Virtual Summer Program Teacher.  The selected candidate will work closely with the Project Coordinator and the Lead Teacher to meet the academic goals of the project, and the needs of the students.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teach classes to high school participants as part of  Upward Bound summer program
  • Revise and/or create subject specific lesson plans aligned with UB's academic summer program theme
  • Select materials for themed designed courses based on UB staff recommendations
  • Develop and submit lesson and assessment plans
  • Deliver courses geared toward generating excitement for learning, as well as developing concrete academic skills in UB participants
  • Provide course content in a manner that helps UB participants to have a head start on their upcoming fall course work ( Math, Science, English)
  • Maintain order in the classroom and monitor, record and report students' performance on a weekly basis
  • Provide appropriate classroom management for 9th -12th grade students
  • Maintain student records ina secure and confidential manner
  • Complete formative and summative evaluations for each student in class (es)
  • Chaperone and participate in field trips
  • Attend staff orientations, weekly meetings and post-summer meeting(s)
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Must be able to teach the required subjects in virtual learning settings:

MATH -  Geometry, Algebra 2, Pre-calculus, Calculus
SCIENCE - General Physical Science, Environmental Science, Earth Systems
ENGLISH - Literature and Composition ( Grammar, Essay Writing, etc.)
SPANISH - Conversational Spanish
FINE ARTS - Painting, Music, or Film (i.e. video production/editing) 
COMMUNICATIONS - Public Speaking, Debate, and or Persuasive Communication Skills 
 

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree, and certification by the Alabama Department of Education in a specialized subject area as required by the project, working knowledge of various computer software, and the ability to apply these skills to a virtual setting, demonstrated acceptable classroom management, and professional communication skills are required.
