Position Description Summary:
APT Research is hiring a Payload Safety Engineer (SMAE-4) to support the Agency Payload Safety Program on the KSC Safety and Mission Assurance Support Services (SMASS IV) contract at Kennedy Space Center, FL.

Responsibilities:
- Provide support for the NASA Agency-level Payload Safety Program which performs Agency Management and Operations (AMO) Payload Safety functions.
- Maintain and update NASA payload safety requirements documentation (including NPR 8715.7 and NASA-STD-8719.24), SATERN payload safety training programs, and NASA Payload Safety Forms, to meet NASA and USSF Range Safety Requirements, 91-710.
- Supports, with the NASA Payload Safety Manager, payload project milestone reviews and the resolution of compliance problems, issues, and questions, received during payload project safety reviews from within NASA payload projects, customers, government regulatory agencies, etc.
- Reviews payload project safety and mission assurance documentation to ensure compliance with NASA, USSF, FAA, and Federal (OSHA, EPA, etc.) regulations regarding environmental concerns and employee safety.
- The payload safety engineer participates and maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies.
Required Experience/Education:
- Education: Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering or Science field
- Experience: 10 years of Engineering experience (direct payload system safety engineering or payload processing engineering highly desired)
Security Clearance Requirement:
- Must be able to qualify for an unescorted badge (US Citizen required) and be able to pass a background investigation & drug test.
Preferred Experience/ skills:
- Experience in engineering, safety, and quality requirements associated with the NASA Launch Services Program (LSP) with payload processing, payload integration, or safety engineering.
- Experience developing, implementing, and analyzing safety controls in design of payload products, processes, and services.
- Experience providing detailed technical assessments and risk management/risk assessments.
- Possess a strong system safety, safety engineering, or payload, spacecraft, or spaceflight hardware program management background.
- Knowledge of NASA Standards for Explosives, Fire Protection, Lifting, Pressure Vessel Systems, USSF 91-710 Range Safety Requirements, OSHA 29 CFR, FAA 14CFR400, as well as applicable national consensus standards, including AIAA, ANSI, ASME and NFPA.
- Exceptional verbal and written communications skills required. Must be able to interact and develop working relationships with various customers, peers, and management within and outside of KSC S&MA.
- High level of experience utilizing Microsoft Office with a strong emphasis on MS Word and Power Point. Knowledgeable skills with MS Excel and Adobe Professional.
- Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.

Travel Requirements:
- Requires ability to travel domestically (within the U.S.) <10% The payload safety engineer may be required to travel to NASA Space Flight Centers (GSFC (WFF), JPF, JSC, MSFC, etc,) and Vandenberg Space Force Base on an infrequent basis as directed by the NASA Payload Safety Manager.
Physical Requirements:
- Requires sitting for extended periods of time at a workstation/desk
- Ability to climb stairs
- Ability to lift >15 lbs.
