Job Summary 
The Structural Engineer Intern will support the ADM Design Services team by assisting with the design, analysis, and inspection of structural systems for industrial facilities. Working under the close supervision of the Structural Department Manager and senior engineers, the intern will gain hands-on experience in applying engineering principles to real-world projects, including the design of structural steel buildings, equipment foundations, and support structures.

This role is designed to provide exposure to professional engineering practices, CAD modeling, and project coordination while developing technical proficiency in structural design and analysis. The intern will participate in tasks such as creating structural drawings, performing basic calculations, and supporting construction and inspection activities.


Position Responsibility:
The Structural Engineer Intern’s responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Manage assigned projects for Summer 2026, with assistance from hiring manager and other EHS operations colleagues. 
  • Assist in the design and analysis of industrial structures, including structural steel buildings and equipment foundations.
  • Support the development of structural connection details and fabrication drawings.
  • Perform basic structural calculations under supervision of licensed engineers.
  • Contribute to design documentation using engineering software and CAD tools.
  • Shadow FT Engineering Staff and assist with inspections and evaluations of existing structures, identifying potential repairs or retrofits.
  • Help prepare technical reports, design summaries, and project documentation.
  • Participate in team meetings to coordinate project design and construction activities.
  • Apply standard engineering practices and procedures while learning company-specific design methods.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure safe and efficient structural designs.
  • Gain exposure to construction standards, codes, and best practices in structural engineering.
  • Participate in and/or lead  meetings, training sessions, and ops briefings. 
  • Present findings, project results, and recommendations to engineering leadership at the conclusion of the internship.
 
Internship Program Requirements:  
  • Education: Ideal candidates are pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Structural or Civil Engineering (with a structural emphasis) and possess a strong interest in industrial building design, problem-solving, and teamwork within a professional engineering environment.
  • GPA: Minimum GPA of 2.8 (3.0 GPA preferred).
  • Work visa sponsorship is not available for this role
  • Transportation: Interns must have their own reliable transportation to and from work.  
  • Geographical Flexibility: Willing to relocate to Decatur, IL for Summer 2025.
  • Background Check: Successful completion of a background check is required.  
  • Availability: Must be available for a summer internship from mid-May to early August 2026.

Internship pay rates vary based on the student's academic standing ranges from $25 - $28 per hour.
