Job profile Summary:
Performs intermediate to complex technical support, general lab maintenance, and lab operational support with some degree of independence to aid in research projects. Responsible for following lab safety standards.

Job Description:

Position Salary Range: $21.20 - $25.00 per hour; DOE

The Central Arizona–Phoenix Long-Term Ecological Research (CAP LTER) program, an affiliate of the Julie Ann Wrigley Global Institute of Sustainability, is seeking two (2) Research Technicians to conduct seasonal point counts for birds across the Phoenix Metro area.

  • This position will start in December 2025 and is expected to last through the first week of May 2026.

  • It will include a five-week break from mid-February to mid-March, between the winter and spring seasons.

  • SCHEDULE: Three (3) days per week with flexible days; 10-15 hours per week. Work starts before sunrise and must be completed within 4 hours of local sunrise.

Essential Duties:

  • Identifying bird species by both sight and sound.

  • Conducting distance-based bird census techniques such as point counts.

  • Locating census points in the city as well as in relatively undifferentiated tracts of desert using hand-held GPS and maps.

  • Occasional off-road driving on uneven terrain.

  • Communicating with CAP LTER Site Manager and other birders.

  • Data entry/Data QC.

Desired Qualifications:

Experience in:

  • Identifying 100+ species of Western birds by sight and PRIMARILY by sound.

  • Conducting point counts.

  • Using hand-held GPS and reading maps.

  • Careful and accurate data collection.

 Demonstrated knowledge of:

  • The Phoenix Metropolitan area and native Sonoran Desert avifauna (resident and migrant).

Evidence of:

  • Ability to work independently.   

  • Attention to detail.

  • Valid U.S. Driver’s License.

 

Working Environment:

  • Activities are primarily performed outside on early mornings and may require working in extreme conditions such as cold and high heat.

  • Frequent movement on uneven terrain.

  • Unloading and loading of light equipment.

  • Ability to clearly communicate verbally in English, read, write, see and hear to perform essential duties.

  • This position requires driving vehicles off-road on uneven terrain and candidates must possess a valid U.S. Driver’s License upon employment.

  • A Department of Motor Vehicles check will also be conducted.

  • Successful candidates will have the option to drive their own vehicle.

  • Mileage reimbursement will be provided to those candidates opting to drive their own vehicles.

The Julie Ann Wrigley Global Institute of Sustainability conducts research, education, and problem- solving related to sustainability, with a special focus on urban environments. The Institute initiates and nurtures work on issues of sustainability across many departments on the four campuses of ASU, and collaborates with other academic institutions, governments, businesses and industries, and community groups locally, nationally, and globally.

Driving Requirement:

This position may require driving. Employee must possess a valid US Driver’s license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment.
