SUMMARY
This position performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled manual tasks using hand tools and equipment to support the installation and maintenance of traffic control signs for the City of Charlotte. As a member of the sign crew, the employee assists with installing, repairing and maintaining traffic signs and specialty signage, including both ground-mounted and overhead signs. The role operates in a fast paced, team-oriented environment and is primarily assigned to the Sign Installation Section, though work may also be required in other sections or on specialized projects as needed.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Install, repair, or maintain various traffic control signs, specialized equipment, and related materials.
2. Operate light, medium, and heavy duty: machinery, equipment, tools, and vehicles.
3. Perform safety tasks, including but not limited to setting up temporary work zones.
4. Administer accurate daily records within the Work & Asset Management system to document labor, equipment, and materials.
5. Place identification decals on traffic control signs.
6. Perform inventory counts of parts, equipment, or materials to maintain appropriate record of stock levels and identify restock needs.
7. Perform related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
Valid Driver License
Ability to obtain a City Driving permit at time of hire
Preferred Qualifications:
A High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
Experience with work hazards, work zones, safety precautions, 811 Locates procedures, OSHA regulations, ground construction, specialized equipment and hand tools, traffic signal control, wires, communication, read and interpreting signal plans, and traffic systems is preferred.
Experience with the methods, practices, tools, and equipment used in the construction and maintenance of regulatory and wayfinding signage (installation, maintenance, and repairs) is preferred.
Computer or tablet experience preferred; including but not limited to: typing, word documents, spreadsheets, and work order management system.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to read and write.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to communicate effectively within a diverse workforce environment.
Ability to troubleshoot and solve problems related to the installation and maintenance of traffic signs with limited supervision from Field Operations Supervisor or Labor Crew Chief II.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, in all weather conditions.
Ability to use specialized equipment (i.e., sign post driver, sign post puller, various power tools) and hand tools used in traffic operations.
Ability to work as a team, and lead crew members on various task and projects.
Ability to read and interpret prints provided by traffic engineers.
Knowledge of methods, materials, tools and standard practices for the installation, operation and maintenance of traffic signal and supporting systems.
Knowledge on the MUTCD for traffic signs.
Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions involved with working in and around heavy vehicle traffic.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office products and Work & Access Management system.

Work in traffic; walk in and around moving vehicles and equipment.
Work involves sitting periodically, including riding in vehicle, attending trainings and meetings, or during use of office equipment such as computer for administrative tasks.

General Information:
Work shall require shift or irregular hours determined at the discretion of the supervisor.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte.
