Job Description
Instructional Designer (World Languages)
Working alongside other instructional designers, authors, campus faculty, and instructors, and various stakeholders to design online world language courses for various products. Each designer supervises his/her own student instructional design assistant(s).
What you’ll do in this position:
Instructional Design and Course Management (50%)
- Identify learning outcomes for each assigned project
- Work with authors, instructors, and/or faculty to create complete design plans based on learning outcomes in compliance with the design standards set forth by each product.
- Complete proposal documents, secure approval for design projects, and define and assign work to appropriate staff.
- Establish, monitor, and seek approval for project budgets.
- Assist instructors, authors, or faculty in creating learning assessments and activities that align with learning outcomes.
- Provide feedback to multiple production teams to ensure lessons and activities are produced as designed.
- Identify and implement appropriate and approved third-party learning activities.
- Assemble learning activities in the appropriate LMS to create a coherent course.
- Respond to design-related issues identified by the quality control team.
- Supervise and provide directions to instructional design assistants.
- Maintain a portfolio of online classes by responding to instructor needs, overseeing needed revisions, and suggesting quality improvements.
- Collaborate with other designers, design assistants, media services, quality assurance specialists, and others to produce fully accessible, copyright-compliant online courses that meet industry and institutional quality standards.
Project Management (30%)
- Establish deadlines with authors, instructors, and different teams in production.
- Communicate deadlines, including ongoing modifications, to production teams and stakeholders.
- Secure approval for and communicate to stakeholders any changes to design plans
- Work closely with production support staff, i.e., programming manager, media team, production manager, etc., to ensure the course or project adheres to appropriate instructional design principles and budget.
- Help program administrators and world language supervisor ensure that courses meet quality standards, are on schedule, and are within budget.
Training/Professional Development (10%)
- Annually attend an instructional design-related conference or workshop, as recommended by your supervisor.
- Participate in peer review activities within the instructional design group.
- Research instructional design theories and best practices relevant to assigned projects.
- Stay current on department policies related to instructional design.
- Always demonstrate professional conduct and outstanding university citizenship.
- Mentor associate instructional designers and instructional design assistants.
Establish and Maintain Author Relationships (5%)
- Maintain professional relationships with authors, instructors, and faculty.
- Provide feedback to the supervisor regarding existing training materials for instructional design assistants, authors, and faculty.
- Build relationships with different stakeholders through new course development and maintain relationships through completing major course revisions in conjunction with faculty/SMEs.
Instructional Design Leadership (5%)
- Provide input on key strategies for portfolio development, processes, and the development of new products.
- Mentor instructional designers, instructional design assistants, and learners to become Christlike leaders.
- Inspire the team to adhere to the mission, vision, and values of Continuing Education and the BYU Mission, Aims, and Values.
What Qualifies you for this role:
Associate Instructional Designer (Level 52: $63,500 - $82,500)
- A firm commitment to the mission of BYU.
- Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, or closely related field
- One or more years’ full-time direct work experience in the field of course design and production.
- Proficiency in a foreign language
- At least one year of teaching or experience designing an online world language course.
- Proficient with an LMS (such as Canvas or Buzz)
- Proficient with Microsoft Office
- Proficient in a foreign language
Instructional Designer (Level 53 $71,000 - $92,500)
- A firm commitment to the mission of BYU.
- Master’s degree in Instructional Technology, Instructional Design, or closely related field
- Three or more years’ work experience in the field of course design and production.
- Proficiency in a foreign language
- Teaching or experience designing an online world language course.
- Proficient with an LMS (such as Canvas or Buzz)
- Proficient with Microsoft Office
- Proficient in a foreign language
Senior Instructional Designer (Level 54 $79,500 - $103,500)
- A firm commitment to the mission of BYU.
- Master’s degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, or closely related field
- Seven or more years of full-time direct work experience in the field of course design and production. Or an equivalent combination of a bachelor’s degree in instructional Design, Instructional Technology, or a closely related field, plus nine or more years of full-time direct work experience in the field of course design and production.
- Proficiency in a foreign language
- Proficient with an LMS (such as Canvas or Buzz)
- Proficient with Microsoft Office
- Proficient in a foreign language
Preferred:
- Familiar with Adobe Creative Suite.
- Familiar with e-learning development tools (such as Smart Builder, H5P interactives, or Articulate Storyline)
- Experience with basic web page design
- Some supervisory experience
