About the Department

The HVAC Technician I assist with repair, installation, and alteration of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems and related equipment. The incumbent performs preventive maintenance and routine servicing of equipment.

Position Duties

1. Assist with repair and installation of HVAC equipment, including refrigeration and air conditioning compressors, receivers, condensers, chillers, water cooling towers, forced air converter units, pumps, automatic and hand valves, expansion valves and capillary tubes.
2. Conduct regular preventive maintenance of refrigeration units, isolated heating, and ventilating units, including electrically operated air conditioning equipment; and provide preventive maintenance service and repair for evaporative coolers.
3. Assist with the repair/replace defective parts in units and equipment and their controls, including thermostats, automatic switches, fan controls, log switches, damper motors, louvers, relays, filters, controls, belts, compressors, heat exchangers, high limit controls, pressure controls, safety valves, and automatic gas valves.
4. Operate a variety of hand and power tools, welder torch, vacuum pump, test equipment utilized in the trade and a motor vehicle; maintain equipment in effective and safe working condition; maintain parts and tool inventory.
5. Lubricate and pack heating, ventilation, refrigeration, and air-conditioning motors, pumps, fans, and other equipment.
6. Assist with the installation and calibration of HVAC systems; install copper tubing and repair pipes and tubing as necessary; test joints and insulate pipes of refrigeration and air conditioning systems; decaled tubing; rebuild pressure and temperature safety valves and water pumps.
7. Assist with the installation, replacement or repair fans, motors, thermostats, fuses, filters, bearings, valves, controls, gaskets and other equipment as necessary.
8. Maintain related records concerning time, labor, and materials; maintain log of tasks performed.
9. Perform other duties of a similar nature or level as requested by supervisor or director.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:

• Standard practices of the HVAC and Refrigeration Trade;
• Materials, methods and tools used in the operation and repair of HVAC and refrigeration systems;
• Air compressors and pneumatic controls;
• Manual and electrical tools and equipment applicable to the HVAC and refrigeration trade;
• Welding and soldering techniques;
• Health and safety regulations;
• Basic record-keeping techniques;
• Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies;
• Yaqui culture, customs, resources and traditions and/or a willingness to learn.

• Assist with mechanical maintenance duties in the inspection, repair, installation and alteration of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems and related equipment and facilities;
• Calibrate systems;
• Perform preventive maintenance and routine servicing of equipment;
• Operate specialized machinery, equipment and tools utilized in the repair, installation and maintenance of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems;
• Understand and follow oral and written directions;
• Meet schedules and time lines;
• Maintain routine records;
• Operate a variety of office equipment, including a computer and related software applications;
• Good communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with co-workers, supervisor, management, Council members, and the public. Have ability to sufficiently exchange or convey information and receive verbal and written work instructions.

Other Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED: and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

Special Requirements: 

• Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver's License; 
• This position will require the incumbent to work non-traditional hours, nights, and weekends; 
• Must have a current Level 1 Arizona Clearance Card, Tribal Gaming License, and Homeland Security Background Check or be able to obtain one within ninety (90) days of hire. Failure to maintain a current Level 1 Clearance Card will result in termination.
