I.  Position Information

Title: Research Navigator 

Department: Natural Sciences and Mathematics 

This position is grant funded until: April 30th 2027

Status: Exempt, Full Time

Classification: EAM III

 

II.  Position Summary

This post-doctoral research position will support biomedical research at Chaminade University by (a) supervising undergraduate researchers in the laboratories of faculty investigators who are focused on human health, (b) developing and implementing collaborative undergraduate research projects, and (c) developing and offering programming that supports student engagement with undergraduate research experiences and provides technical, intellectual and research ethics training. This position is funded completely or in part by funds received from NIH and other extramural funding programs. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program and/or operational needs of the University and the availability of grant funds.

 

III.  Reports To:

Direct Report To:  The Principal Investigator of the primary funding source (NIH INBRE grant) program who is Professor of Biology and Research Director of the UN CIFAL Center

 

Indirect Report To:  The Dean of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. This position will be required to submit weekly verbal and written reports as requested by the Supervisor.

 

IV.  Essential Duties and Responsibilities presentation.

  • Supports faculty biomedical research as assigned by the Chaminade INBRE PI
  • Recruits, trains, supervises, and mentors undergraduate research students in biomedical project areas in collaboration with faculty supervisors
  • Develops and implements a collaborative undergraduate team research project (i.e., the BRITE Biomedical Research and Innovation Training Experience) on a theme specified by the Chaminade INBRE PI
  • Develops  and implements the Pathways to Research undergraduate seminar series to recruit and engage students in research experiences
  • Promotes biomedical research opportunities at Chaminade through interactions with student clubs, class visits, and partnerships with activities such as the TA and STEM outreach programs
  • Designs, executes, analyzes, interprets, and reports on biomedical research projects to collaborating faculty
  • Builds technical capacity for biomedical research at Chaminade through training and utilization of advanced instrumentation, and facilitates usage of off-campus core facilities.
  • Contributes data and administrative support towards required grant reporting, the submission of extramural funding applications, peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, and posters, and deployment of evaluation instruments
  • Contributes tracking and participant metrics on undergraduate research to grant interim and annual reports

VI.  Education and Experience

  • Required:

Ph.D in biology or related discipline with a biomedical/human health focus

  • Preferred Education/Experience: 

Ph.D. with previous doctoral and post-doctoral work in the area of biomedical sciences.


 

VII.  Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities 

  • Core biomedical laboratory techniques including molecular biology, cell biology, protein biochemistry, and tissue culture.
  • Experience with advanced instrumentation such as confocal microscopy, analytics/bioassay platforms, real-time PCR, and use of core facilities for methods such as RNASeq, advanced imaging, and flow cytometry.
  • Experience with tissue culture, including 3-dimensional organoid models.
  • Experience with statistical analyses of biological data and presentation of data visualizations.
  • Experience training, teaching, and supervising undergraduate trainees, including preparation of presentations for poster and conference sessions.
  • Experience in providing research services to faculty, including planning, time management, project execution, and reporting.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite or related software and familiarity with search engines such as NCBI and PubMed.


VIII. Physical Requirements 

Duties involve light work in an office and community setting and requires a minimum of physical effort with intermittent sitting, standing, climbing stairs, and walking inclines. Must be able to lift 10 pounds, walk the campus with ease, and have excellent motor skills.  Must have finger dexterity.


 IX. Other Requirements

  • Must have a valid Driver's License.
  • This is a full-time, exempt position. Forty hours per week (M-F) will be the general rule. However, depending on the project cycles and workflow demands of the department, additional hours or workday schedule changes may be occasionally required. Must be willing and able to work occasional nights and weekends and a varying schedule.
  • The position may incorporate remote working and travel/temporary deployment to partner research sites in Hawaii.
  • Observes all safety and health regulations and works in accordance with safe work procedures and policies of the University. Reports unsafe acts/conditions and injuries in a timely and proper manner.
  • Report weekly to the immediate supervisor, both verbally and in writing, and more frequently as requested.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
  • Some holiday or weekend work may be required.

XI/ Grant Funded Position:

This position is funded completely or in part by funds received from an NIH research grant and other funding sources. Funds received from the grant are subject to annual renewal on April 30, 2026, until April 30, 2027. Continuation of employment is dependent on program and/or operational needs of the University and the annual availability of grant funds.
