QUALIFICATIONS
Required: High school diploma or GED. Must be certified as a Hemodialysis Technician by the Oregon Health Authority (OHA). Provisional certification may be considered for those in training. Experience with dialysis equipment setup, disinfection, and water treatment systems.
Preferred: Previous healthcare experience in dialysis, phlebotomy, CNA, or related clinical setting. Strong interpersonal and communication skills with patients and interdisciplinary staff. Knowledge of regulatory standards related to dialysis care. Comfort working in a fast-paced inpatient hospital environment, including weekends and holidays.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS
Requires frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to 50 pounds, as well as assisting patients with mobility and positioning. The position involves repetitive hand and arm movements when setting up and monitoring dialysis equipment. Exposure to blood, body fluids, and infectious materials is routine, with appropriate personal protective equipment provided. The role requires sustained attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to respond quickly and appropriately in urgent or emergency situations. The PCT must manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment, adapt to rapidly changing patient conditions, and maintain emotional resilience when working with patients experiencing chronic illness or distress. Compassion, clear communication, and teamwork are essential.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Prepare, initiate, monitor, and discontinue hemodialysis treatments under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN).
- Perform vascular access cannulation for fistulas, grafts, and catheters.
- Administer heparin and saline as assigned by the RN and within Oregon’s technician scope of practice.
- Monitor and document vital signs, treatment parameters, and patient responses; promptly report abnormalities to nursing staff.
- Set up, test, disinfect, and maintain dialysis machines and related equipment.
- Monitor and maintain the water treatment system in compliance with AAMI, CMS, and OHA standards.
- Perform quality control checks, safety inspections, and equipment performance testing before and during treatments.
- Monitor, track, order, and restock dialysis-related supplies and consumables.
- Accurately document treatment data, observations, and interventions in the medical record.
- Maintain complete and confidential patient records in accordance with HIPAA.
- Participate in ongoing quality assurance, performance improvement, and infection prevention initiatives.
- Collaborate with the interdisciplinary dialysis team to ensure safe and effective patient care.
- Maintain professional communication with patients, families, nurses, physicians, and peers.
- Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and continuing education as required.
