General Statement of Job:
This position oversees and manages all nursing functions for one or more major sections of the Health Care District's care facilities. Employees perform administrative and supervisory work in managing staff functions and evaluate the effectiveness of the care provided to residents and patients. This position maintains twenty-four (24) hour responsibility and accountability for resident and patient care and staff, and performs duties in accordance with established regulations, policies, nursing standards, and medical instructions. The Assistant Director of Nursing coordinates the administrative and clinical activities for the nursing department.
Essential Functions:
Supports and demonstrates practices consistent with the mission, philosophy, standards, policies, and procedures of the District's Nursing Department.
Assists the Director of Nursing in planning, developing, organizing, implementing, evaluating, and directing the day-to-day functions of the facility in accordance with current regulations and guidelines that govern the facility.
Participates in developing, maintaining, and updating the written policies and procedures that govern the day-to-day functions of the facility.
Serves as the nursing administrative resource and leader for the facility in the absence of the Director of Nursing.
Delegates clinical and managerial responsibilities to nursing staff.
Supervises and assesses staffing needs for the shift and allocates nursing personnel accordingly.
Recommends staffing patterns to the director of nursing and oversees the daily staffing schedule.
Serves as a resource to staff in clinical and managerial decision-making.
Assures nursing staff complies with facility policies and procedures and regulatory requirements.
Identifies problems and reports and makes recommendations for addressing these problems to the Director of Nursing through a review of nursing documentation and periodic QA audits.
Interviews applicants for position vacancies and makes hiring recommendations to the Director of Nursing.
Collaborates with unit nurse managers/off shift supervisors in the performance evaluations of employees; makes promotion and termination recommendations to the Director of Nursing.
Disciplines nursing staff and consults with unit nurse managers/off shift supervisors regarding disciplinary actions.
Communicates problems and needs to other departments.
Assists with managing documentation and investigates incidents and accidents.
Participates in developing, implementing, and revising the facility's quality assurance program. Collects data and compiles information as needed. Coordinates the facility Quality Assurance/Improvement meeting.
Manages the facility wound care program, completes documentation related to wound management and prepares reports for the weekly focus meeting.
Manages the facility Infection Control Program and prepares the appropriate reports. Oversees the infection/surveillance program.
Assists and participates in activities related to facility inspection or investigation by regulatory or accrediting agencies.
Conducts meetings to communicate information and changes or additions in policies and procedures.
Prepares written and oral reports for the director of nursing.
Assist in the development and implementation of nursing recruitment and retention programs.
Coordinate C.N.A.s participation in Activities with the Residents.
Reviews clinical records of potential residents (new admissions) when requested.
Participates in and assures appropriate assessment of residents.
Participates in the development, implementation, communication, and evaluation of resident care plans.
Assures staff is implementing care plans, delivering care appropriately, and recognizing changes in resident's status.
Performs administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, and charting as necessary.
Assists on a nursing unit in the absence of a Nurse Manager.
Validates nursing staff?s clinical decisions.
Completes payroll as needed and monitors and follows up on employee attendance as required.
Assists staff in recognizing and addressing residents? needs in a holistic manner.
Maintains and improves competencies by participating in and attending professional educational programs and meetings and reading current professional literature.
Adheres to professional nursing codes of ethics.
Emergency duty may be required of the incumbent that includes working in Red Cross shelters or to perform other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to threats or disasters, man-made or natural.

Qualifications
Education:
Associate's, Bachelor's, or Diploma in Nursing required.
Experience:
Five (5) years experience as a licensed nurse required, two (2) of which shall be acquired in a supervisory/lead capacity in caring for critically/terminally ill or long-term care persons.
Certification:
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required. Certification or evidence of continuing education in gerontological nursing, trauma, closed head injury, and nursing administration in long-term care preferred.
Licensure:
State of Florida, Department of Health Registered Nurse required.
