The Archives Technician Intern will perform paraprofessional and technical work that supports access to the archival and library holdings and physical control over the records. This work includes collection care, circulating archives and library records, and ensuring proper use, care, and storage of all collection materials.
Responsibilities
- Independently performs routine paraprofessional library and/or archival tasks and services.
- Performs circulation functions including managing holds, pulls and refiles items, and insures items are delivered to patrons and staff accurately and appropriately.
- Evaluates the physical condition of records in the course of other duties and alerts supervisor or other designated staff to condition problems that limit access or threaten the safety of records, determining and/or carrying out the appropriate preservation and/or holding maintenance actions for all record formats.
- Within established procedures, identifies and evaluates materials that require repair or other conservation treatments and flags them for conservation work.
- Within established procedures, identifies collection items that have additional housing needs, then helps with the rehousing of materials.
- Coordinates, monitors, and carries out the physical assignment and/or relocation and shelving of collection items.
Qualifications
Required:
- Paid Interns are qualified while enrolled in an educational institution and for one year following graduation. They must sign a Paid Internship Engagement Letter.
- Familiarity with museum, library, and archives best practices policies and procedures
- Must be able to pass a thorough background check
- Proficiency using windows, Microsoft Office products, as well as cataloging and other associated software and hardware tools
- Good oral and written communication skills with an understanding of Library and Archive practices and processes
- Proficient in English
- Ability to: interact courteously with staff and patrons; communicate effectively; work in a team environment; use and explain information tools and services
- Must be able to quickly read and understand classification systems, and learn a modified Dewey Decimal system
- Self-directed within a team dynamic while maintaining quick and efficient delivery to patrons and staff, is required
- Personal commitment to understand, identify, apply, and follow collection care best practices and procedures
- Ability to safely meet physical job requirements such as good/corrected eyesight, sitting, walking/standing for up to 8 hours per day, lifting-up to 50 lbs, walking long distances, climbing ladders, and working for long periods of time in cool temperatures
- Must be able to remain stationary for long periods of time and operate computer
