About the Department
Responsible for coordinating the college’s Career Services Office; assists with the promotion and delivery of career service activities to current and prospective students, alumni, area employers and the public. Additional emphasis is placed on career exploration and academic planning to assist undecided students with selecting a degree program and the development of an educational plan to promote the achievement of educational, personal and career goals.
In accordance with federal, state, and local requirements under the Workforce Investment Opportunity Act (WIOA) program, works with customers from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds in providing assistance with job searches and resume/cover letter development. Conducts vocational workshops to prepare individuals for work experience opportunities and employment.
Position Duties
A. Provides career counseling and academic advising to undecided KCC students and identified at-risk groups, utilizing a variety of career exploration tools and related instruments as a means of promoting student success and retention.
B. Develops and presents career exploration programs for students, alumni and community members on résumé writing, interviewing, networking, job search, and professional readiness including classroom presentations, workshops and webinars.
C. Maintains the career services homepage and various career services job boards designed to assist students, alumni, community members and areas employers. Manages the use of Handshake, the online career management platform for job postings, events, fairs, etc. and utilizes data analytics to summarize engagement and use of the platform and its tools to develop and implement strategies for increased effectiveness.
D. Collaborates with the assistant director of Continuing Education and Business partnerships to promote internships, job shadowing, apprenticeships and work-based learning initiatives.
E. Organizes and hosts various job fairs and other recruiting activities for employers, students, alumni and community members. Makes necessary arrangements to provide recruiters with conference space to interview students, clients and graduates seeking employment.
F. Manages end-to-end experience for the WIOA program for unemployed and underemployed learners, building supportive, positive and trusting relationships with clients, identifying barriers and developing solutions resulting in positive academic results and job placement. Establishes and maintains an effective filing system and utilizes data from the Illinois Workforce Development System (IWDS) to ensure performance metric attainment consistent with the goals and objectives of the WIOA program.
Minimum Qualifications
A. Bachelor’s degree required in psychology, counseling, student services, career/technical education, human resources or related field; master’s degree preferred.
B. Certification as a professional résumé writer preferred.
C. Experience in career planning and job placement services, vocational education, advising or counseling preferred
D. Qualified candidate must have strong presentation, oral and written communication skills, computer experience with Microsoft Office or comparable software applications.
