Job Summary:

A CDL Driver I drives and operates vehicles such as automobiles, vans, buses, panel or pick-up trucks, tandem dump and/or log trucks, front-end loaders, small backhoes, tow trucks, mechanical sweepers, and other 2 ½ to 6 ton trucks or other vehicles of similar weighted complexity and performs laboring tasks and performs moderately difficult electrical work involving the installation, maintenance and repair of street lighting and related equipment.  Works of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities.       

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION

On or before the date of filing the application, each candidate must:

EDUCATION: Have a high school diploma or GED certification from an accredited institution.

AND

EXPERIENCE: Have one year of experience operating vehicles such as automobiles, vans, buses, panel or pickup trucks, tandem dump trucks, log trucks, front-end loaders, small backhoes, tow trucks, mechanical sweepers, or other vehicles with a capacity of 2½ to 6 tons — or one year of experience in electrical maintenance, installation, or repair of exterior lighting systems, or in building construction electrical work.

OR

EQUIVALENCY (NOTES): Have three years of experience operating heavy equipment vehicles.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATES:

Have a valid Maryland Class A or B Commercial driver's license, or an equivalent out-of-state driver’s license acceptable to the Office of Risk Management is required and eligibility to obtain a Baltimore City driver’s permit.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Skill in the safe operation of automobiles, trucks, tow trucks, tractors, tandem dump trucks, front-end loaders, small backhoe, small bulldozer, aerial lift truck and other related vehicles.

  • Ability to perform preventive maintenance check.

  • Ability to perform laborer tasks.

  • Ability to work from heights.

  • Ability to follow directions.           

  • Ability to learn the operation of a two-way radio.

  • Ability to speak clearly.

  • Ability to deal effectively with the public in hostile situations.

  • Ability to keep legible records.

Background Check                                      

Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointments to positions identified as positions of trust will be required to complete authorization for a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint must be successfully completed.

Probation

All persons, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a mandatory six-month probation.

Eligibility

Qualified candidates will be considered for vacancies as they arise, for a period of at least six months. The decision of the Director of Human Resources with respect to acceptable minimum qualifications is final.                                                

Education Accreditation

Applicants’ education must be obtained from an accredited institution. Education credentials obtained out of the US must be evaluated for US equivalency. Evaluation agencies information may be obtained at www.naces.org.

Selection Process

All candidates indicating the minimum qualifications on their applications will be placed on the eligible list without further examination. The training and experience of each candidate will be evaluated for appropriateness and quantity. It is essential, therefore, that you give complete and accurate information on your application. Vagueness or omission may prevent you from being considered for this position. Qualified candidates will not be listed in rank order.    

Examination Process

Applicants must provide sufficient information on their application to show that they meet the minimum qualifications for this recruitment. Successful applicants will be placed on the employment certified eligible list for at least six months.

The examination will consist of a rating of your education, training, and experience as presented on your application and as they relate to the requirements of the position. You may be required to complete supplemental questions to further examine specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities of the position. Therefore, it is important that you provide complete and accurate information on your application.                            

NOTE:  In The Department of Transportation: Some positions require just a valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver’s license, or an equivalent out-of-state driver’s license acceptable to the Office of Risk Management. 

                                       

NOTE: Some positions in this classification will require eligible candidates who are under final consideration for appointments to authorize the release of criminal conviction information.

NOTE: Some positions in this class will require the employee to provide their own hand tools.
