athenahealth seeks a highly experienced Senior Engineering Manager (EM) to help us in our mission to deliver accessible, high-quality, and sustainable healthcare for all.
We seek a seasoned engineering leader who is passionate about architecting scalable, high-quality software and solving complex challenges. You will manage two scrum teams within our Patient Experience subdivision while contributing to broader responsibilities.
As a Sr. Engineering Manager, your primary responsibility is project and organizational leadership—ensuring your teams efficiently deliver the roadmap, collaborating with stakeholders across the organization, and building the skills and careers of your direct reports. You bring curiosity, empathy, and an open mind, and you are motivated by advancing healthcare technology.
The Team
The Patient Experience subdivision focuses on our patients, empowering them to manage their health and wellness as active partners with their healthcare team across the athena ecosystem. Its goal is to deliver innovative software that gives patients control over their health journey while streamlining workflows for healthcare staff.
The Messaging Platform Zone is a group of scrum teams within Patient Experience builds the platform and campaigns that send millions of important messages to patients about their healthcare using SMS, email, Push Notification and phone calls.
Key responsibilities
Deliver and influence the roadmap
· Align engineering roadmaps with company strategy through collaboration with product managers and stakeholders.
· Own timelines, resources, and stakeholder communications to ensure on-time delivery.
· Proactively identify and mitigate SDLC risks to meet quality and release targets.
· Build cross-functional relationships to navigate ambiguity and remove silos.
Build a high performing team
· Drive performance management and career development, including goal setting and feedback.
· Lead recruiting, foster a culture of continuous learning, and optimize teams to build engaged, high-performing teams.
· Encourage knowledge sharing and adoption of new tools and methods.
Contribute to the technology
· Translate complex technical topics for both technical and non-technical stakeholders; ensure clear design specs aligned with policies.
· Facilitate technical design discussions and ensure designs meet athena’s standards and best practices.
· Champion quality, innovation, and continuous improvement; stay current with industry trends.
· Identify opportunities for optimization, automation, and modernization within engineering.
Required qualifications
· Bachelor’s degree with 12+ years in technology or software development
· 5+ years in an Engineering Management role
· Experience leading projects throughout all phases of SDLC from ideation to delivery to sustenance delivering reliable, performant and secure platforms and services.
· Ability to translate business needs into clearly defined projects, taking a hands-on approach to guide solution design and implementation.
· Proven track record of providing technical direction, contributing and driving architectural discussions, and overseeing implementation details.
· Excellent communication skills with ability to understand complex technical topics, their implications to stakeholders and users, and clearly summarize or explain to both technical and nontechnical stakeholders
· Strong interpersonal skills with ability to build productive relationships within and across the organization
· Passionate about building highly effective and engaged teams with the record to prove it
· Cultivate and manage engineering excellence by enhancing the skills of team members and supporting their career growth.
· Experience using AI tools to enhance the productivity of you and your teams
· Ability to meet and collaborate with senior leadership in USA and India time zones
Preferred qualifications
· 15+ years of SW engineering experience with significant cloud/microservices exposure
· Experience managing multiple teams concurrently
· Experience leading platform teams with internal engineering team “customers”
· Relevant certifications in cloud computing, agile, PMP, AWS, and/or others in SW
· At least 2 years of software development experience in web / microservices architectures
· Industry experience in healthcare, telecommunications, and/or customer outreach
· Experience with microservices and monolith or perl-based legacy architectures
