The American School for the Deaf (ASD) is the oldest school for the deaf, founded in 1817 by Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc. The American School for the Deaf is committed to serving deaf and hard of hearing infants, youth, and their families in development of intellect and the enhancement of quality of life utilizing specially designed instruction through an American Sign Language and English Bilingual Approach, empowering them to become educated and self-directed life-long learners.
ASD is located in West Hartford, a town recognized as one of the top ten towns for raising families. POSITION DESCRIPTION
Position: Administrative Assistant
Department: PACES/Autism
Supervisor: Assistant Principal or Designee
Description: 12 months – Benefits eligible
Union or NCB: Union
SCOPE OF DUTIES
Under the supervision of the Principal/Assistant Principal or designee, performs general administrative and secretarial duties for the Autism department.
PRIMARY DUTIES
- Performs general office duties.
- Maintains an organized filing system for department including student records.
- Arranges meetings and spaces, including setup and coordination for department staff and events.
- Provides a professional and welcoming space for students, staff, and visitors.
- Assists with the Principal/Assistant Principal’s schedule, calendar, and program planning.
- Facilitates the planning and implementation of program operations.
- Works with the Business Office on matters relating to the PACES Autism department budget, processes purchase orders, and ensures receipts are returned in a timely manner.
- Orders supplies and maintains inventory for the office and related programs.
- Prepares correspondence and organizes, updates, and maintains department records, files, and databases.
- Maintains employee attendance records within the department.
- Creates agendas and maintains minutes for department meetings.
- Serves as a point of contact for students and parents regarding activities and general department inquiries.
- Assists in the collection and dissemination of information.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- High school diploma, supplemented by a minimum of two years of secretarial experience.
- Additional education or secretarial experience will substitute for required experience on a year-for-year basis.
- Sign language proficiency or a willingness to learn.
- Bilingual Spanish speaking preferred.
- Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office (especially Word, Power Point, and Excel) and Google platform required.

- Compensation range is based on experience and available upon request
