ORGANIZATION SUMMARY
World Relief is a global Christian humanitarian organization whose mission is to boldly engage the world’s greatest crises in partnership with the church. This position is reliant upon funding and may be subject to modification or termination based on resource availability.


POSITION SUMMARY:
World Relief Sacramento is seeking a limited term ESL Specialist Instructor, who helps preliterate refugee women learn the basics of English, from speaking simple survival phrases to building basic numeracy and literacy skills, thus fostering self-sufficiency.  The ESL Specialist Instructor co-teaches alongside the current ESL Specialist Instructor and partners with caseworkers to provide a wholistic program addressing language and cultural integration.  Instruction takes place on Zoom and utilizes multiple breakout rooms.  This position supports and gives direction to volunteers who serve as in-class teaching assistants, test proctors, and/or assist in material drop-offs.  This role also assists with client recruitment, enrollment, assessment, record keeping, and reporting.  This is a hybrid position:  the ESL Specialist Instructor works from home on instruction days, coming into the office on other days as needed to complete remaining duties. There are 32 hours scheduled per week and the employee must be available Tue, Wed, and Thu 8:30-2:00pm.

This is a limited-term position that begins December 1, 2025 and ends July 31, 2026, with possible extension possible if additional funding is secured.

ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Model effective pedagogical skills in teaching oral English, numeracy, and beginning literacy
  • Utilize existing ESL Literacy curriculum and teaching methods in client instruction
  • Collaborate with other teaching staff to adapt curriculum as needed
  • Create an encouraging and supportive environment that fosters learning using trauma-informed teaching practices
  • Prepare teaching/learning materials such as realia, handouts, and WhatsApp videos 
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date client and program records, including attendance, goals tracking, and client case files, on Teams and Dynamics database
  • Assess clients’ literacy and CASAS levels at defined intervals and track scoring
  • Train clients and volunteers on basic phone and laptop functionality as needed  Volunteer Management:
  • Oversee and direct volunteers during class time, debriefs, material drop-offs, and follow-up communications, such as sending weekly lesson plans and materials to Teaching Assistants
  • Provide training for volunteers, as needed, such as in-class coaching and special professional development workshops
  • Ensure volunteers track hours through appropriate mechanisms
  • Assist as needed in recruiting volunteers for class Teaching Assistants, ESL assessments, and material drop-offs, with support of Church and Community Engagement Department
  • Encourage and support volunteers and donors through regular communication


  • JOB REQUIREMENTS:
  • Mature and personal Christian faith
  • Committed to the mission, vision, and values of World Relief
  • Desire to serve and empower the Church to impact vulnerable communities
  • Able to affirm and/or acknowledge World Reliefs Core Beliefs, Statement of Faith, Christian Identity and National Association of Evangelicals' For the Health of The Nation document
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher, ideally in Education, TESOL, or a related field 
  • Prior teaching experience in education, ESL, and/or literacy
  • Confident and capable of navigating across digital platforms, including Microsoft Office Suite, Zoom, and WhatsApp
  • Hold current valid US Driver’s License and have regular access to a fully insured and reliable personal vehicle 


  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Ideally, hold current CA Adult Ed Teaching Credential or be in the process of obtaining one
  • Ability to work effectively and sensitively with people of diverse cultural, religious, and language backgrounds
  • Ability to manage a classroom and support a team of volunteers
  • Experience working with non-native English speakers; experience with pre-literate populations preferred 
  • Proactive communicator, with strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, and able to work closely with a team 
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously
  • Flexible and adaptable to needs of clients and changing program realities
  • Ability to complete tasks independently, thoroughly, and on time
  • Strong working knowledge of common phone and laptop functionalities and the ability to provide basic technical troubleshooting as needed
  • Commitment to professionalism and client confidentiality
