We are looking for a hungry self-starter who wants to show they have what it takes to produce multimedia video content for the region’s publishers and broadcasters. Prior experience of self-shooting, laptop editing and live reporting is desirable, but full training will be given to the lucky candidate who lands this role.
You will be based at our newsroom in Bradford and will be expected to cover council and public meetings, as well as to go out and talk to people.
An ability to get around the patch is therefore essential. You will need a full driving licence and access to your own car.
The local democracy reporter scheme is funded via the BBC, but you will be employed by Newsquest and will be a key member of the West Yorkshire team.
Your content will go out on a wire and will be available to the county’s leading news outlets, including the BBC and ITV.
Key Responsibilities
- Broadcast creation: To self-shoot video packages to a broadcast standard. To edit footage in a confident, creative and effective manner, making full use of production software tools to make interesting and engaging video packages for online and broadcast partners. To insert on-screen graphics to identify interviewees and help clarify important points. To produce different versions of your content, suitable for social media, online or broadcast use.
- Interviewing and reporting: To use your skills to conduct interviews with local politicians and the people affected by their decisions. To produce video reports that bring clarity and insight to complex issues.
- Investigative Excellence: Dive deep into local political stories, uncovering the truth and providing in-depth analysis that informs and engages our audiences.
- Community Engagement: Build strong relationships with local government officials, community leaders, and residents, becoming a trusted voice in the community.
- Champion Fair Reporting: Ensure your stories are accurate, balanced, and fair, upholding the highest standards of journalistic integrity.
- Collaborative Spirit: Work closely with fellow local democracy reporters and editors to deliver comprehensive and compelling coverage.
- Digital Savvy: Utilise social media and digital platforms to reach and engage with a wide audience, fostering a vibrant community dialogue.
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
- Journalistic Passion: Proven experience in journalism, with a strong focus on local news and a deep understanding of local government and political processes.
- Exceptional Skills: Outstanding writing, research, and communication abilities. Ability to identify case-studies and humanise each story. Previous experience in video and audio production would be an asset.
- Independent Drive: Ability to work autonomously and thrive under tight deadlines.
- Digital Proficiency: Expertise in digital journalism and social media – and how to make the most of online tools and platforms to foster engagement.
- A driving licence and access to a car will be required
