Job Title: Structural Engineer

Department: D08 – Design

Reports To: Design Manager

Status: Exempt

Salary Range: S-08: $72,346.12 - $103,038.42yr

  

Position Summary: At SC Swiderski, the Structural Engineer serves as the Supervising Professional of Record and is responsible for planning, designing, and facilitating the structural design of residential and multifamily projects. This role ensures that building designs meet company specifications, align with state and local code compliance, and support the company’s vision for high-quality, innovative communities. The Structural Engineer works collaboratively with architects, contractors, and internal teams to integrate structural elements into designs, provide technical guidance, and oversee compliance throughout construction.

   

Job Duties:

Engineering & Compliance (45%)

  • Perform duties as Supervising Professional of Record, ensuring compliance with Wisconsin Administrative Code A-E 8.10.
  • Sign and seal state approval plans, calculations, drawings, reports, and submittal documents as a licensed Professional Engineer.
  • Submit required documents into the state eSLA system (e.g., engineered plans, truss component submittals, building compliance statements).
  • Address DSPS plan reviewer feedback and ensure corrective action when needed.
  • Conduct structural code reviews for projects requiring state submittals, ensuring adherence to company standards.
  • Participate in and oversee on-site compliance inspections during construction.
  • Maintain PE licensure status, attend continuing education, and complete code refresher courses as required.
  • Provide education, training, and technical guidance on code compliance to design staff.
  • Review geo-technical reports and integrate findings into structural design.
  • Verify construction site compliance with approved structural plans and identify issues requiring remediation.

Design Services (35%)

  • Develop structural plans for single-family homes, multifamily units, townhouses, and residential developments.
  • Create conceptual and schematic building designs based on Owner or Company direction.
  • Collaborate on design concepts for new and existing projects to ensure functionality and innovation.
  • Provide technical guidance during design development and construction phases.
  • Work closely with architects, internal design staff, and contractors to ensure proper integration of structural elements.
  • Review and coordinate panel and truss manufacturing requirements.
  • Contribute to creating innovative, cost-effective, and sustainable design solutions.
  • Prepare progress reports and updates on design-related structural considerations.
  • Assist with peer review of designs to improve quality and compliance.
  • Mentor and support design staff in structural aspects of residential design.

Planning & Strategy (20%)

  • Partner with internal teams (Development, Design, and Construction) to align structural strategies with project goals.
  • Contribute to development initiatives by providing input on RFPs and potential projects.
  • Support the development of standard operating procedures and company design guidelines.
  • Participate in strategic planning initiatives, offering engineering expertise to growth initiatives.
  • Collaborate with architects, engineers, consultants, and contractors to integrate structural, civil, and mechanical systems.
  • Assist in budget development, scheduling, and resource allocation for engineering projects.
  • Monitor industry trends, building codes, and best practices to recommend improvements.
  • Ensure projects adhere to established timeframes and budgets.
  • Support training and mentoring programs for junior design staff.
  • Act as a resource for cross-departmental technical problem-solving and innovation.

Requirements

   

Qualifications:

Education & Licensure:

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil or structural engineering.
  • Current Professional Engineer (PE) license in Wisconsin (required).

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • 3+ years of structural engineering experience with residential and multifamily projects.
  • Proven expertise in wood framing, panel, and truss system design.
  • Strong knowledge of building codes, construction regulations, and permitting processes.
  • Proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD, and Microsoft Office applications (MS Teams preferred).
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and time-management skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
  • Ability to train, mentor, and direct staff effectively.

Work Schedule:

The work schedule for the Structural Engineer requires the ability to work 45 – 50 hours per week during normal business hours of Monday – Friday, with occasional hours outside out of that range as business necessitates. Site visits and occasional travel are required with this position.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit and stand for 8–10 hours daily.
  • Ability to move safely on construction sites, undeveloped land, and uneven terrain.
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position 70% of the time.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Work Environment:

This position operates in a professional office setting and on active project sites. Travel to properties, job sites, and municipal meetings is required. Occasional in-state travel (and out of state as expansion occurs) to active jobsites is required with this position. This role may be exposed to dust and noise associated with saws and power tools, on occasion.
