Job Summary
The goal of the STEM Program is to improve student learning in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and to inspire students to consider careers in related fields. Reporting to the Site Coordinator, the STEM YDP is responsible for designing, planning and implementing the STEM program at Markham Middle School and in collaboration with the other BGCC sites. Additionally, the STEM YDP works alongside the STEM Coordinator and Academic Success Director to meet yearly STEM program impact goals.
KEY ROLES (Essential Job Responsibilities)
Leadership
· Establish activities and services that prepare youth for success and create an outcome-driven Club experience that facilitates the achievement of youth development outcomes.
· Create a system in which employees can perform at their best by creating clear goals and expectations related to your program
· Communicate, interpret, and enforce policies and procedures established by BGCC
Membership Recruitment and Retention
- Promote and stimulate program participation by leading and implementing a variety of recruitment, retention and recognition strategies especially around STEM.
- Register new members and participate in their Club orientation process.
- Provide guidance and role modeling to members.
Program Development and Implementation
· Support student growth in STEM related activities including programming skills, understanding of various operating systems, and collaborating in team based STEM Competitions.
· Promote, implement, and administer STEM programs, services and activities for members.
· Create curriculum in all areas STEM and also other programs as needed.
· Ensure quality program is offered in all areas Academic Success specifically STEM.
· Ensure the development of appropriate STEM related lesson plan and activities.
· Foster the educational experience via hands-on, developmentally appropriate, and highly interactive methods.
· Establish a system for evaluating the program and content to measure understanding and effectiveness.
· Report all damaged equipment to supervisor and STEM Coordinator and Academic Success Director.
· Prepare and implement weekly and monthly STEM program schedules.
· Ability to acquire a working knowledge of STEM based projects, problem-solving skills, and computer programming skills.
· Preferred: computer science/math/science/engineering background and/or experience with either astronomy, cyber security, coding or robotics.
· Experience working with youth and teens.
· Complete grant reports and communicate with Development team as needed.
Supervision
• Maintain members order and discipline by managing members’ behavior; reinforces rules of the club and all the recreational areas.
• Ensure a productive work environment by participating in regular unit and organization staff meetings.
• Identify, plan, implement and support training and development opportunities for STEM programming, volunteers and staff.
OTHER JOB REQUIREMENTS:
• Recognize equipment malfunction and take appropriate action.
• Establish and maintain cooperative effective working relationships with others.
• Understand and follow oral and written directions.
• Meet schedules and timelines.
• Pass mandatory random drug and alcohol test.
• Mandatory CPR and First Aid Certifications and TB clearance.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
• May participate in special programs and/or events.
• May be required to help in other program areas.
• Assume other duties as assigned.
RELATIONSHIPS:
Internal: Maintains close, daily contact with Club staff (professional and volunteer), Club members, and supervisor to receive/provide information, discuss issues, explain guidelines/ instructions; instruct; and advise/counsel.
External: Maintains contact with external community groups, schools, members' parents and others to assist in resolving problems.
Requirements
SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
• High School diploma or GED.
• Experience in working with children.
• Knowledge of youth development and STEM programs.
• Ability to provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others on how to apply procedures and standards to specific sports.
• Ability to use, operates, and/or handle and transport physical education equipment such as goal areas, exercise mats, portable basketball goals, etc.
• Ability to motivate youth and manage behavior problems.
• Ability to deal with the general public.
• Ability to plan and implement quality programs for youth.
• Ability to organize and supervise members in a safe environment.
ENVIRONMENT AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Tasks are regularly performed with moderate exposure to environmental conditions such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, and temperature and noise extremes.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Tasks involve the ability to work up to eight hours a day in an active youth focused environment that may require some physical exertion, typically involving some combination of standing for long periods of time, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of up to 50 pounds.
