Job Title: District School Finance Director
Reports to: Superintendent
Supervises: Business office staff (accountants, payroll, purchasing, accounts payable/receivable, budget staff)
Job Summary:
The Mammoth-San Manuel Unified School District Finance Director is responsible for the overall financial management of the school district. This includes strategic planning, budgeting, forecasting, accounting, payroll, and reporting functions. The director ensures compliance with federal, state, and local laws as well as district policies, while providing transparent financial information to the Superintendent, Governing Board, and the community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
· Develop, recommend, and administer the district’s annual budget in collaboration with the Superintendent and Governing Board.
· Oversee the preparation of financial statements, monthly reports, and long-range financial forecasts.
· Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local financial reporting requirements and school finance regulations.
· Manage district accounting functions, including payroll, purchasing, accounts payable/receivable, and grant accounting.
· Monitor cash flow, investments, and debt service; make recommendations for optimal resource use.
· Coordinate with external auditors for annual audits and ensure corrective actions on audit findings.
· Advise the Superintendent and Governing Board on the financial impact of policy decisions, negotiations, and program initiatives.
· Develop financial procedures, internal controls, and risk management practices to safeguard district assets.
· Supervise and evaluate business office staff, providing training and professional development opportunities.
· Oversee financial aspects of federal and state grants, ensuring appropriate use of restricted funds.
· Support contract negotiations by providing financial data and cost projections.
· Prepare presentations and reports for the Governing Board, community groups, and oversight agencies.
· Collaborate with other district leaders to align resources with strategic goals and instructional priorities.
Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field (Master’s degree preferred).
· Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Government Finance Officer (CGFO) designation desirable.
· Minimum 5–7 years of progressively responsible financial management experience, preferably in public school finance or government.
· Strong knowledge of school finance laws, state funding formulas, and governmental accounting standards.
· Experience with payroll, purchasing, and grant compliance in a school or government setting.
· Proven leadership and supervisory skills.
· Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
· Proficiency in financial software systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
