Description
This role presents an exciting opportunity for a technically proficient Senior Oracle Platform Engineer. You will be joining the highly skilled and well regarded Database support team, an integral part of the wider CNI Platform support team.
As a senior engineer, you will be able to provide support and expertise to other team members and contribute to all deliverables including planning.
The role requires the ability to work out of hours, partake in a 24x7 standby rota and provide incident support as required for critical events.
This position requires a minimum of 40% in office attendance. All other times can be done from home or another suitable, and agreed, location in the UK.

A Day in the Role
The key application supported by the CNI Platform team is RTGS, this service settles £800billion on an average day and is classed as Critical National Infrastructure, by the UK Government, important to the smooth functioning of the UK economy. Each day brings new challenges and opportunities, creating an environment suited for those who work well in a fast-paced setting. An individual whose approach is getting it “right” in tight timescales can make a real difference.
As this role includes support, you may have problem tickets to resolve including detailed root cause analysis.
A typical day would start with the team’s stand-up meeting for the current sprint where you will discuss your immediate workload and any blockers that may exist. Other days may see you attending a major incident management meeting, representing the CNI Platform as the senior Oracle Platform engineer on call, where you have worked on problem root cause and resolution.
You may be the team member responsible for the daily Oracle Platform health checks, a mixture of automated and manual tasks that from part of a permanent daily activity.
Working through your assigned workload, as per the standup and JIRA priorities. These tasks could range from issues or activities that are completed in a matter of hours, or continuation of issues or activities that are almost mini projects lasting over many monthly sprints.
Depending on the rota cover you are on, it could mean on-call standby cover for the evening or weekend. There is also sometimes planned out of hours work or support required into the evening or night, for implementation or support of Oracle Platform issues or maintenance, and/or external teams support (such as supporting Linux patching or upgrades, or the Application team Maintenance Release deployments)
After settlement has closed for the day, you may be patching a service or providing failover support to the application teams.
Whatever your day looks like it is guaranteed to be full, fast paced and rewarding.
Role Requirements
You are a dedicated Oracle Platform engineer within an Agile environment and meet the minimum criteria. You have a clear collaborative approach to working with others, and keen to share knowledge with colleagues.
You also understand that the RTGS environment is critical to the UK Payments Systems which requires a methodical approach and flexibility to work outside of core hours as may be required.
You use best practice in Continuous Improvement/Continuous Development and to manage environments for High Availability and Resilience - safely promoting configuration changes and maintenance from pre-production to live production environments.
Work closely with cross-functional teams ensuring teams understand the deployment process, have access to the necessary tools, and are aligned toward the same goals.
Directly working alongside senior members of external teams and leadership through architectural and problem resolution activities.
Development and maintenance of technology roadmaps for resilient and available Oracle Platforms.
Minimum Criteria
We’re looking for someone who has the following key skills and experience:
- Oracle Database Real Application Cluster (RAC) configurations
- Oracle Dataguard configuration, maintenance and operational optimisation
- Oracle Goldengate configuration and Support
- Oracle key Vault (OKV) Capability
- Oracle Database engine Fault Diagnosis and Resolution
- Practical expertise in Oracle Database performance tuning and optimization
- Oracle Enterprise Monitor (OEM) setup, configuration, and alerting enhancements (Metric Extensions)
- Oracle Platform Security concepts and delivery (Kerberos, mTLS and Database Vault)
- Experience with automated build and deployment of Oracle Platforms (Jenkins/Ansible)
- Ability to provide in and out of hours support to the 24/7 production environment, resolving issues as they arise. This includes start of day and end of day working patterns
Essential Criteria
We are interested in hearing from candidates who have the following capabilities:
- Experience of building effective working relationships with others and provide challenge where appropriate
- Attention to detail with the ability to diagnose and resolve detailed and difficult Oracle Platform issues
- Researching and developing solutions that expand, modernise or improve the service and technology portfolios, automate IT operations, reduce costs or increase levels of service, to demonstrate technical ownership
- Effective member of out of hours standby rota
Desirable Criteria
It would also be beneficial, but not necessary, to have some of the following:
- Experience with other Database Technologies, e.g. Microsoft SQL, PostgreSQL, MySQL
- Splunk Monitoring Integration capability
- Linux Operating System Administration knowledge and experience
- Enterprise systems network integrations with Oracle Platforms
- SAN (Pure) Database Storage Configuration and Integration
- Security skills: knowledge of modern security practices and technologies to ensure the security of applications and infrastructure.
- Industry Certifications

It is important to note that the Bank has a robust ITIL Change Management process, has business-critical processes that depend on our RTGS environment, and requires incidents on these technologies to be resolved quickly. Because of this, you will also need to work evenings and weekends to perform certain tasks, especially on live systems.

Salary and Benefits Information
We encourage flexible working, part time working and job share arrangements. Part time salary and benefits will be on a pro-rated basis as appropriate.
We offer a salary as follows:
Leeds circa £72,320 - £81,360
In addition, we also offer a comprehensive benefits package as detailed below:
- Currently a non-contributory, career average pension giving you a guaranteed retirement benefit of 1/80th of your annual salary for every year worked. There is the option to increase your pension (to 1/65th) or decrease (to 1/105th) in exchange for salary through our flexible benefits programme each year. The Bank has the discretion to vary standard accrual rates and dial up and dial down rates at any time and to withdraw dial up and dial down options at any time.
- A discretionary performance award based on a current award pool.
- An 8% benefits allowance with the option to take as salary or purchase a wide range of flexible benefits.
