JOB TITLE: Network Engineer/Senior Network Engineer
STATUS: Non-Exempt
DEPARTMENT: Network Engineering
REPORTS TO: Network Engineering Manager
FULL/PART-TIME: Full-Time
LOCATION: Hybrid – Minimum 2 Days p/week in office (Syracuse or Holland Patent, NY)

THE MISSION:
The Network Engineer and Senior Network Engineer designs, installs and maintains core network infrastructure components that provide the foundation for all Northland solutions and services.
SUMMARY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Network Engineer
- Implements products and features
- Manages network and system upgrades
- Supports technical staff and customers
- Plans and executes projects
- Maintains infrastructure
Senior Network Engineer
- Provides exceptional customer service/support
- Manages major network ticket incidents
- Ensures accuracy and details on all MOP/SOPs/TTs/WOs
NETWORK ENGINEER JOB DUTIES:
- Maintains expertise in the technical operation of all Northland products and services
- Leads or participates in projects that create new products or features
- Assists with establishing and updating standard operating procedures in line with network and product changes
- Participates in the planning and execution of maintenance activities
- Maintains Network Monitoring Systems
- Maintains and implements best practices to ensure security of all Northland assets
- Assists with the sales, quoting, and provisioning of advanced services
- Maintains Central Office infrastructure
- Maintains hardware and software systems that provide services such as including DNS, Radius, Mail servers, Microsoft Active Directory and Microsoft SQL
- Maintains network hardware infrastructure including Cisco, Arista, Calix, and Metaswitch
- Performs regular network capacity planning and recommend solutions in advance
- Implements systems, changes, and recommendations that ensure 100% network core uptime
- Provides technical support to other departments or customers as needed
- Maintains and implements best practices that ensure we have a network that can be supported in the most efficient manner possible
- On call rotation responsibilities with other team members
SENIOR NETWORK ENGINEER JOB DUTIES:
- Includes all above Network Engineer job duties
- Provides direction and research assistance for Network Engineers as needed
- Works on escalated troubles that could be complex and time consuming, including escalating and engaging when needed with other departments
- Assists the Network Engineering Manager and Director of Network Management Centers on special projects
- Completes all paperwork and reporting in accordance with departmental standards, including maintaining an accurate knowledge base and writing and peer reviewing MOPs
- Mentors team members on technical issues
- Maintains expertise in the technical operation of all Northland products and services
- Manages and enforces cybersecurity policies related to internal networks, servers, VPN, workstations, computers, and mobile devices, including upgrades, patches, and responding to security events
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None
MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS - Network Engineer
- Associate’s degree or 3 or more years of relevant experience
- Proven customer service and problem-solving skills, working over the phone and on-site with customers and employees
- Ability to communicate effectively both written and orally, including the ability to flex based on other communication styles
- Exceptional troubleshooting skills
- Ability to develop rapport with people within and outside the company, and engage with people in a manner that provides a positive experience
- Experience and expertise in Linux, Microsoft Windows Server products and related technologies such as DNS, DHCP, backup systems, email systems, virus protection, desktop operating systems, etc.
- Detailed theoretical and practical knowledge of IP protocols, firewalls, and routers
- Experience configuring, installing, and troubleshooting centralized network infrastructure such as routers, switches, etc.
- VMware, MCSE, SonicWALL, Palo Alto, Arista, Cisco, Linux experience or certifications
- Basic power and electronics concepts
- Basic programming and scripting (sh, php, perl)
- Ability to explain and document complex technical subjects with concise and simple terms
- Ability to understand business operations and finances
- Ability to think objectively and independently and be self-motivated when considering efficient and creative ways to accomplish tasks
- Ability to follow-through with meeting time frames and associated deadlines, including the ability to move past obstacles using internal/external resources to achieve results
- Ability to be self-directed with organizing, planning, and prioritizing workload, which includes the ability to make decisions when adjustments need to be made based on achieving deadlines
MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS – Senior Network Engineer
- Includes all the above qualifications
- At least 5 years’ experience working with iBGP (ISIS/iBGP) routing protocols in complex routing environments
- Must have a high level of professionalism, communications skills, and be able to work independently without direct supervision
PREFERRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Network Engineer
- CCNA or Equivalent
- Bachelor’s Degree or 5+ years of experience
Senior Network Engineer
- CCNP or Equivalent
- Bachelor’s Degree or 10+ years of experience
- ISP work experience
- Cyber Security certifications (example - Security+, CISSP)
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:
A valid driver's license or ability to access transportation to attend work group and organization meetings is necessary.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to reach, sit, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, use fingers, grasp, feel, talk, hear, and perform repetitive motions. Ability to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
EQUIPMENT AND MACHINES USED:
Ability to use voicemail, telephone, calculator, computer, printer.
