About the Department

The purpose of the class is to read and record utility meter readings. Under general supervision, performs outdoor work involving the reading and recording of city utility meters. Duties include excessive walking, bending and driving in inclement weather conditions. Although the employee works independently and is often physically removed from supervision, duties are performed within the framework of pre-established policies and procedures.

Position Duties

  • Follows prescribed routes to read and record utility meter information; 
  • Visually inspects meters and generates work order if meters needing repair or replacement;
  • Reports any irregularities noted on route;
  • Maintains and clears meter boxes of bugs, dirt and vegetation, as needed;
  • Enter meter information into hand held devices.
  • Maintains and stocks city vehicle.
  • Inspects vehicles, performs service or minor maintenance and reports malfunctions.
  • Re-read meters to verify readings;
  • Performs routine office tasks, such as typing, filing, faxing, phoning, and copying.
  • This position is subject to stand-by status.  
  • Maintains traffic control and ensures vehicle and pedestrian safety procedures are observed.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public as necessitated by the work.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires a high school diploma or GED. Requires a minimum of two (2) years of experience working outside performing general physical labor. A general knowledge of computers is required including Microsoft Office. Must be able to work with little supervision and there is considerable discretion to act independently. Requires general knowledge of street locations throughout the City service area. Weekend, holiday and afterhours work may be required, as well as after-hours response and emergencies.
Requires a valid State of Florida driver's license and satisfactory driving record as a condition of initial and continued employment.
