Essential Job Responsibilities:
Clinical
- Leads local nutrition support team in the clinical management of patients receiving PN therapy
- Performs on-site patient evaluations and provides education related to PN Program and PN related disease states
- Assesses new parenteral nutrition patient referrals for re-feeding syndrome and determines if patient is an appropriate candidate for hospital discharge to PN therapy and/or home start PN
- Performs nutrition assessments on all new parenteral nutrition patients
- Performs on-going monitoring as determined at start of care and leads reassessments of PN patients by the team
- Reviews PN labs regularly and discusses issues that arise such as fluid and electrolyte imbalances with multi-disciplinary Nutrition Support Team
- Makes recommendations to the physician on the patient’s formula and plan of care using proven clinical science and sound clinical judgement
- Monitors PN therapy efficacy and patient clinical status to assist in the prevention of rehospitalizations of PN patients
- Participates in regular patient care meetings and clinical rounds
- Provides continuing education to internal clinical staff on all aspects of nutrition support
- Drives on-going continuing education for all team clinicians
- Follows ASPEN and internal guidelines for the clinical onboarding and on-going management of patients in need of PN therapy
- Provides support to internal staff, patients, caregivers, or referral sources regarding aspects of nutrition support including products, supplies and therapy regimen
- Develops relationships with nutrition vendor representatives
- Encourages research (abstract) and performance improvement activities
- Participates in company driven outcomes reporting
Operational
- Educates internal staff on nutrition formulary
- In-services staff on nutrition support topics and new products as required
Reimbursement
- Supports PN reimbursement related activities
- Acts as a resource for clinical documentation needs regarding DIF and payer related qualifications and criteria for patient reimbursements
- Remains current on payer reimbursements and industry trends including changes that may occur that affect reimbursement for PN services
Sales/Marketing
- Participates in joint sales calls with sales team
- Builds relationships with referral sources including physicians and hospital/clinic RD’s through on-going communications and in-person visits
- Provides sales support, training and follow-up to all sales and management staff
- Participates in office strategic sales planning and implementation with management and sales
- Collaborates with clinicians, sales, and marketing teams in the creation of patient teaching tools and PN formularies
- Provides educational presentations to referral sources
- Acts as a liaison to nutrition support physicians, nutrition support teams, customers, and sales team
- Tracks direct influence of sales/marketing activities on business growth
- Assists sales staff with business development strategies to grow and support PN Therapy business
- Participates in vendor fairs, community events and promotional activities in support of Nutrition Program
Physical Demands:
Required to stand, walk, sit, talk, and hear; required to use hands to operate vehicles and office equipment; must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 lbs; specific vision requirements for this job include: close, distance and peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus, reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position without compromising patient care.
