About Primer
Fixing our K-12 education system is a civilizationally-important problem. We believe that all of our problems — including the ones that dominate the headlines — are downstream of education.
We have a simple thesis on how to solve it: empower 1,000's of educators to launch microschools in their communities.
We believe the historical tradeoff between price (tuition) and quality is a false dichotomy.
PrimerOS automates and eliminates much of the costs of traditional schools. Microschools have a structural advantage — asset-light real estate — which means much lower capex and opex. You put it together, and you get something that's never existed before: a world-class education that's accessible to normal American families and can rapidly scale.
About the Role
We’re making our first dedicated Data hire at Primer. Primer might be the most operationally complex company you’ll ever touch—we’re sitting on terabytes of underutilized data across every layer of the business. Your role is to turn that raw data into a foundation: building the systems, tools, and culture that make data indispensable in every decision, from daily operations to multi-year strategy.
This is a hybrid role: part data engineer, part analytics engineer, part BI analyst. Your first mandate will focus on standing up a modern data stack, then layering in self-serve dashboards and high-leverage strategic analysis.
Done right, this is one of the hardest—and most impactful—data roles you’ll find.
Responsibilities
Build scalable data infrastructure: design, implement, and maintain the pipelines, models, and systems that ensure data accuracy, integrity, and accessibility.
Oversee the development and management of Primer's data warehouse to unify currently disjointed sources and create a single source of truth.
Establish governance, documentation, and best practices to make data reliable and consistent across every function.
Design and maintain dashboards and reports that provide stakeholders with accurate, timely metrics once the foundation is in place.
Provide teams with self-service analytics tools and frameworks, enabling them to independently explore and act on data.
Identify key business challenges and opportunities, ensuring the right data infrastructure exists to analyze and act on them.
Partner with leadership and high-leverage teams (e.g., Real Estate) to translate data into strategic and operational decisions.
Drive organizational alignment around data by standardizing metric definitions across teams, ensuring consistency in reporting, and championing a culture of data-driven decision-making at every level.
Qualifications
Experience: 8+ years in analytics, data science, business intelligence, or similar roles.
Education: BS/MS degree in data science, statistics, mathematics, economics, finance, engineering, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
Technical Skills:
Strong proficiency in SQL.
Proficiency with Python or R.
Experience with BI tools like Tableau, Looker, Power BI, or equivalent.
Experience with modern data stack tools like dbt or equivalent.
Communication Skills: Excellent data storytelling skills to effectively engage with stakeholders.
Collaboration Skills: Strong ability to work across departments, identifying and prioritizing analytics problems to deliver actionable insights.
Curiosity and Initiative: Intense curiosity to ask “why?” and use data to find answers, combined with a “no task too small” mentality.
Self-Motivation: Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced startup environment.
Bonus Skills
Experience with analytics notebook tools like Hex, Hyperquery, or equivalent.
