POSITION SUMMARY

The Commercial Underwriter (UW) is an individual who must apply basic underwriting skills to ensure that commercial new business applications, endorsement requests, and inspections meet program criteria and underwriting requirements. This person performs duties within the underwriting rules and procedures established by Underwriting Management. 


PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Commercial Underwriter I

•    Reviews commercial new business applications for eligibility and completeness and declines applications that do not meet FAIR Plan underwriting requirements.
•    Applies available underwriting tools to guard against adverse risks.
•    Makes underwriting decisions according to the FAIR Plan’s underwriting rules.
•    Handles renewal and endorsement referrals, inspections and other underwriting correspondence for commercial policies.
•    Handles referrals from other departments.
•    Performs supportive office functions relevant to underwriting operations.
•    Researches and resolves daily problems.
•    Applies knowledge of insurance principles and coverages.
•    Performs other duties as assigned by Underwriting leadership. 

Qualifications:

•    High school diploma or equivalent required. 
•    Prior insurance experience (including commercial) and coverage knowledge preferred.
•    Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal.
•    Pays attention to details and follow guidelines.
•    Ability to perform tasks with minimal supervision.
•    Ability to perform repetitive and slightly complicated tasks.
•    Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
•    Exercise good decision-making and judgment.
•    Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
•    Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.


Commercial Underwriter II

•    Identifies, evaluates, and makes underwriting decisions according to FAIR Plan commercial underwriting guidelines and program eligibility but often performs more complex tasks requiring in-depth experience/knowledge.
•    Reviews, evaluates, and monitors inspection reports for compliance and loss prevention.
•    Performs appropriate classification and rate changes upon notification of exposure changes.
•    Serves as a resource for determining eligibility.
•    Handles endorsement referrals and general underwriting correspondence including initial research of Department of Insurance Request for Assistance letters.
•    Serves as an advisor to Commercial Underwriter I and provides assistance and training to others.
•    All responsibilities of the Commercial Underwriter I.


Qualifications:

•    High school diploma or equivalent required. 
•    18 months prior commercial insurance experience and coverage knowledge required.
•    Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal.

Key Differentiators Between Positions:

•    COM UW I: Entry-level position focused on handling basic underwriting and following established procedures.
•    COM UW II: Advanced role with increased responsibilities, including handling complex issues, and mentoring junior staff.
