About the Department

A Deputy Sheriff serves in a highly responsible and visible capacity in the protection of life and property, preserves the public peace, prevents crimes, arrests violators of the law, enforces all laws and ordinances and performs other related work as required or assigned.

Position Duties

  • Conducts self-initiated investigations to identify sources of illegal activity. The member will process raw intelligence data, document said data as appropriate and disseminate to the proper investigative entities.
  • Documents and carefully maintains the security and control of all collected evidence, ensuring the integrity of the evidence and limited accessibility so the evidence may be presented and accepted by a court of law pursuant to state and federal statutes consistent with agency policies and procedures.
  • Assists other agencies/divisions in conducting criminal investigations by sharing information, expertise and/or other investigative resources as appropriate while keeping their supervisor apprised of the nature and specifics of the request for assistance.
  • Maintains communication by properly operating a radio or other approved communications device for routine communication with members of their agency or with outside agencies when involved in multi-jurisdictional cases, following all applicable procedures and policies regarding transmissions. 
  • Utilizes all available law enforcement and community resources to accurately identify and monitor prior offenders, gang members, or extremist groups' activities/presence in the community with the goal of preventing potential criminal activities and without violating the constitutional rights of the individual(s) consistent with agency policies.
  • Analyzes criminal activities in the community in order to identify specific crime patterns such as the type of crime, time and place of occurrence, and offender identity, with the goal of developing effective means and information/evidence to prevent or solve criminal activity consistent with agency policies.
  • Utilizes all available legal law enforcement and community resources to successfully resolve minor investigations consistent with agency policies.
  • Schedules vehicle maintenance appointments ensuring that there are no scheduling conflicts and all required maintenance parts/supplies are available if at all possible.
  • Monitors dispatch and responds to all dispatch directed services calls in a timely manner consistent with call classification and in accordance with agency policies.
  • Conducts a traffic stop with minimal disruption of traffic flow while adhering to officer safety procedures at all times and either issue a citation or warning to the driver and or passengers in accordance with applicable traffic laws and agency policies.
  • Enters and retrieves suspect / vehicle / dispatch / service call information from the mobile computer.
  • Responds to calls for assistance, providing the requesting unit with the assistance required to safely resolve the situation in accordance with agencies policies.
  • Identifies a crime scene, disperses onlookers, gathers witnesses, sets up a cord on around the perimeter of the scene and ensures that the integrity of the crime scene and evidence is not compromised, tampered with, altered, contaminated, or left unattended in accordance with agency policies.
  • Maintains control of individuals in custody, ensuring that no escapes or unnecessary injuries occur and the suspect's rights are not violated pursuant to agency policies.
  • Promotes public safety in patrol areas consistent with agency policies by conducting routine active patrolling of assigned zones/ areas/beats observing and investigating all suspicious activities / subjects. 
  • Prepares and/or reviews probable cause documents and legally obtains an arrest warrant in accordance with agency policies and state laws.
  • Utilizes investigative resources and criminal information systems to establish or verify the true identity of suspect or arrested individuals/'fugitives.
  • Locates, apprehends and arrests suspects without undue harm and ensures the suspect's rights are not violated while maintaining officer safety in accordance with agency policies/procedures.
  • Interviews persons in a professional manner, obtaining and recording accurate and pertinent information without violating the individual's rights pursuant to agency policies.
  • Makes every effort to quickly apprehend a fleeing suspect utilizing the necessary amount of force required to subdue the individual while observing officer safety procedures at all time, and appropriate restraints are applied so as to control but not cause injury to the suspect, and the suspect's rights are not violated. 
  • Identifies and seizes, impounds, or confiscates vehicle, craft, currency, or property in accordance with court orders if applicable, state laws, and agency policies, delivering or arranging transportation of item(s) seized to the property room or appropriate agency/personnel.
  • Ensures that all appropriate legal documents are completed for items seized without court order pursuant to all applicable state laws and agency policies.
  • Utilizes all available legal resources within agency guidelines to proactively gather complete and accurate intelligence of known or suspected offenders with the goal of preventing and/or solving crime.
  • Accumulates and disseminates accurate information addressing events or critical issues to higher authority without delay.
  • Ensures that their work area is clean, organized,safeandpresentableinaccordancewithagency policies andprocedures.
  • Utilizestheappropriateamount/levelofforce required for the situation as specified in accordance with agencypolicies.
  • Observes agency pursuit guidelines when initiating,engaging,orsupervisingvehicle/boatpursuits.
  • Processes applicable incoming and outgoing documents and/or files in a timely manner consistent with supervisory direction and/or agency policies/procedures.
  • Participates in cross-training with other co-workers; assists those co-workers when the need arises and learns new tasks by working together as a team.
  • Reports identified or potential maintenance, safety, and/or non-compliance findings, hazards, and incidents to the appropriate personnel and/or department. 
  • Timely completes all assignments, special projects, and budgetary requirements (if applicable) as directed, adhering to applicable agency policies.
  • Adheres to leave and attendance policies, including punctual arrival and completing full shifts. Informs the supervisor about illness or untimely incidents, reports overtime hours worked, and timely submits timesheet, attendance, and leave requests.
  • Regularly checks assigned mailbox, phone calls, PowerDMS, and email messages, responding promptly and professionally. 
  • Makes assigned chain of command aware of anything noteworthy. 
  • Responds to supervision, guidance, direction, and feedback from executive staff and superiors in a receptive manner and in accordance with agency policies. 
  • Conducts themselves in a polite, helpful, courteous, ethical, and professional manner, abiding by the established code of ethics, and demonstrates a courteous and professional image when engaged in any activity with the public. 
  • Cultivates positive working relationships with colleagues and other agency units to enhance work area output and services in line with agency policies. 
  • Demonstrates an understanding, consideration, and respect of cultural, religious, and gender differences when interacting with the public and coworkers.  
  • Actively participate in job-specific training. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.  

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education, Experience and Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Proficient in Microsoft office products
  • Speak and understand the English language
  • Internal candidates must have successfully completed their probationary period
  • Internal candidates with punitive disciplinary action within 365 days are ineligible
  • Internal candidates must have completed applicable CCSO FTEP requirements 
  • The following items (or authorized equivalents) may be required at various steps in the application process: 
    1. Driver's License
    2. Birth Certificate
    3. Social Security Card
    4. Form DD214 for all periods served in the military
    5. GED or High School Diploma and Sealed Transcripts from the highest level of education
    6. FDLE Authority for Release (notarized)

Certification, Licenses and Registrations Requirements:

  • Basic law enforcement certification required (420 hours).
  • Successful completion of state exam.
  • Process a valid Driver’s License upon hire. Maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License.

Other Qualifications

Salary is negotiable for full-time positions prior to initial hire, if requested, based on verified experience up to step five (5) of the assigned pay grade. Current employee salary changes are determined based on internal methodology. Please contact Human Resources with any questions.
