R&D Maizières Process lab is dedicated to supporting ArcelorMittal’s production plants competitiveness, quality and sustainability by the development or improvement of innovative processes or processing routes (from cokemaking to metallic coating).

Your role

As a Research engineer in the Steelmaking department of ArcelorMittal R&D, you will lead studies and give support to our plants worldwide in order to tackle the challenges created by the new decarbonized processes or health and safety rules evolution (metallurgy, productivity, quality,...) and propose evolution and optimization of the production practices.

You will:

  • Provide a specific focus and develop experience on the evaluation of materials and alternative materials to be used in future production routes.
  • Develop our portfolio on casting powders optimization and develop the knowledge to be able to support our plants in the choice of powders.
  • Take the lead on continuous casting refractories activities (road map animation, technical assistance for plants, benchmarks).
  • Participate in R&D projects for the development of new or optimized processes in ArcelorMittal industrial plants. This will include the evaluation of new breakthrough technologies for the steelmaking industry, the deployment of new industrial tools to ensure that steel grades produced on new routes display the same quality and properties as those produced until now. 
  • Work closely with ArcelorMittal industrial plants with frequent business trips to provide expertise for technical assistance (e.g. solve quality or process issues).
  • Design, organize and analyze process trials from lab to industrial scale, including 6t pilot scale in Maizières facilities.
  • Interact with the whole ArcelorMittal community: Global R&D specialists and technicians, plant experts, corporate teams, etc. and develop collaborative research with external partners (academic laboratories, technical centres, suppliers).

Your profile

  • You hold a Master’s degree or a PhD with a solid scientific background in material science, thermodynamic, thermochemistry, process engineering, material characterization.
  • A first experience in the field of high temperature processes and evaluation/characterization of steelmaking materials, chemical engineering, sintering... would be an asset.
  • You are fluent in French and English.
  • You worked on academic projects or research assistantships. You are able to write technical reports or research papers.
  • You know how to define and structure research problems, data analysis and experimental validation.
  • You have good social skills to work in project teams within a multi-cultural environment and different factories. You are able to present findings clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • You are willing to go on-site, conduct thorough analysis, take a step back to gain perspective, and propose and implement improvement action plans.
  • You are open to travel worldwide.

Within this context, you will be working for Maizières Process research centre located in Maizières-lès-Metz (France) which main mission is to contribute to ArcelorMittal’s production lines competitiveness and sustainability by the development or improvement of innovative processes or processing routes (from Ironmaking to metallic coating). The objectives of the laboratory are answering the needs of our operations (mineral processing, steel upstream operations, steel downstream operations, product quality, transversal issues).
