About the Department

This is a Temporary Part Time, unrepresented position.  There are no benefits associated with this position.

Theatre Technicians provide technical support to public groups using the Veterans Memorial Theatre, Varsity Theatre, Mobile stage, and other City-related spaces or events.   Technicians will also have duties related to the maintenance of the theatre equipment and spaces and some administrative tasks as assigned. Pay rate is commensurate with experience.  

Position Duties

Examples of Duties

Provide support for user groups during rental

Work includes:

  • Lighting design, hang, focus, programming and operation.
  • Sound and video setup and operation.
  • Show operation including, stage management, run crew, and fly rail.
  • Coordination with user groups in basic safety and operation of theatre equipment.
  • Insuring Theatre Use Guidelines are followed.

 Maintain theatre-specific equipment

Work includes:

  • This equipment includes, but is not limited to, theatrical lighting, sound, video systems and wiring, rigging system, stage deck and curtains, and assisted listening.
  • Rehanging and restore of rep plot.
  • Yearly inventory of all theatre equipment and supplies
  • Regular equipment checks and logs for the wheelchair lift, orchestra pit, chain motors, rigging, and AED/First Aid,
  • Other general facility maintenance including replacing light bulbs, cleaning.

Supervise Facility

Work includes:

  • Unlocking doors before pre-arranged call times.
  • Insuring facility is clean and ready for use.
  • Responsible for executing emergency procedures.
  • Providing user group with cleaning supplies when required.
  • Performing basic custodial needs.
  • Securing equipment and locking facility at end of day.

 Other Projects as assigned

Work may include:

  • Hanging of visual art in theatre gallery.
  • Basic scenic construction projects.
  • Distribution of Arts and Culture marketing materials.
  • Staff trainings in technical skill building, first-aid and safety.
  • Moving of materials and equipment between spaces.
  • Assisting with administrative tasks for the Theatre of the Arts and Culture Program.

 Job Requirements

Due to the nature of live events and the tasks related to maintaining and operating a theatrical venue staff should expect the following work conditions:    

  • Availability to work mornings, nights weekends, and holidays on an inconsistent and on-call basis.  
  • Climb stairs and/or ladders while working.  
  • Bend, squat and kneel while working.    
  • Work in a personnel lift or catwalk from heights of 30 feet or less.  
  •  Intermittently carry weight of 75 pounds or less.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimal Qualifications 

All applicants must meet the following minimal qualifications:   

  • Be over the age of 18.   
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally or through writing in a professional manner.  
  • Applicants must be proficient on a computer and be familiar with Microsoft Word and Excel.    
  • Be comfortable working with renters and their patrons in a live event setting in a courteous and professional manner.  
  • Have some previous work experience relating to the duties mentioned above. This could include theatre, arts, carpentry, electrics, audio/visual fields, front of house, events, administration, or customer service.   

Desired Qualifications 

Candidates should exhibit the following abilities:   

  • Working collaboratively and in cooperation with those contacted in the course of performance of duties.   
  • Be a proactive communicator both orally and in writing.   
  • Willingness to learn new skills on the job.   
  • Perform assigned duties independently or with minimal supervision.    
  • To think critically and able to problem solve or trouble shoot.    
  • Be punctual, and able to keep to and manage a schedule.    

Additionally, ideal candidates will have at least one years’ experience in technical theatre and have some familiarity with the following:   

  • Knowledge of safe work practices in the theatre.  
  • Use of hand tools and power tools.   
  • Hanging, circuiting, dressing, and focusing of lighting instruments.   
  • Programming and operation of ETC Lighting Boards.  
  • Set up, operation, and live Mixing of Multi-channel audio console.  
  • Operation of rigging systems.   
  • Stage Management, including show calling or running a rehearsal.    
  • Experience with theatre related computer programs including, Q-Lab, Isadora, Vector Works, Auto-Cad, or RecTrac.   

License or Certificates 

  • Possession of a valid California driver’s license is required for the Theatre Technician position.
