Job Description:
Scope/Purpose of the Position
The purpose of this position is to lead and develop production operations to consistently meet or exceed production, quality, safety, and cost objectives. This role encompasses managing multiple production lines and shifts, building a high-performing team, and fostering a culture focused on product excellence, employee development, and safety. The Production Manager contributes to the broader organizational goals by driving operational efficiency, talent pipeline development, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions
Primary Duties:
- Lead and develop supervisors who manage production teams, overseeing production activities across multiple lines and shifts with a combined team of approximately 50–100 employees.
- Build and maintain a high-performing workforce through coaching, training, talent development, and succession planning.
- Ensure production schedules are met with a strong focus on product quality, food safety, and operational efficiency.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives targeting quality, safety, productivity, and cost reduction.
- Champion a safety-first culture with proactive safety programs aiming for zero accidents and compliance with all regulatory requirements.
- Monitor and analyze key performance indicators (KPIs) related to production output, quality, yield, and safety, taking corrective actions as needed.
Secondary Duties:
- Address and resolve customer complaints and quality issues by collaborating with quality assurance and other departments.
- Oversee staffing plans and skill development to ensure adequate coverage for production demands.
- Maintain positive employee relations and support a collaborative, engaging work environment.
Collaboration:
- Work closely with Quality Assurance, Maintenance, Sanitation, R&D, HR and Supply Chain teams to align on production goals, resolve issues, and streamline operations.
- Communicate effectively with internal teams and leadership regarding production progress, issues, and improvement opportunities.
Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with all company policies, food safety regulations, GMPs, and environmental health and safety standards.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Directly manage production supervisors who in turn manage production operators.
- Accountable for leadership development, performance management, and building a sustainable talent pipeline within the production function.
Requirements
Required Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Food Science, Operations Management, or related field.
Experience:
- 5+ years of experience in food manufacturing or production management.
- Proven track record in leading teams, driving safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
Skills:
- Strong knowledge of food production processes and quality standards.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
- Ability to lead cross-functional teams and manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- FSMA and HACCP certifications are a plus.
- Experience with lean manufacturing or process improvement methodologies.
- Experience in artisanal or industrial bread and baked goods production
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, or climb (including stairs/ladders).
- Ability to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms.
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Physical dexterity necessary to handle supplies, machine parts and tools.
- Vision abilities: close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- Ability and willingness to work varied shifts, including nights/weekends as needed.
Work Environment
- The role is based on the production floor, which may include exposure to varying temperatures, humidity, and noise levels.
