Halifax Public Libraries invites INTERNAL and EXTERNAL applications for the full-time, permanent, Cataloguing & Access Lead position within the Collection Management Department, located at the Woodlawn Public Library. 

This is a unionized position. Preference will be given to internal applicants from the NSUPE Local 14 bargaining unit.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Collection Management department works closely with library branches and departments in order to provide relevant and timely service. We build digital and physical collections by focusing on high quality and relevant selections that reflect the interests and diversity of our community. We provide easy access to these collections to meet the needs of our community.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
As the Cataloguing & Access Lead at Halifax Public Libraries, you will:
  • Plan, coordinate, and evaluate cataloguing-related operations and services:
    • Stay informed about cataloguing standards and practices in the library field, and ensure our cataloguing work meets professional standards while exploring new and creative methods
    • Develop and deliver specific cataloguing training for the Collection Management staff; develop training resources and provide guidance to branch staff on use of cataloguing and collection components of ILS and public-facing discovery layer
    • Develop and maintain relationships with external organizations and vendors to source and acquire cataloguing and material processing services, resources, and technologies
  • Plan, coordinate, and evaluate material processing-related operations and services:
    • Direct the material processing team on processes and practices related to the preparation (labeling, stickering, barcoding, etc.) of catalogued materials
    • Contribute to the tendering process and sourcing of equipment and supplies used for processing new material
  • Lead a team of Cataloguing and Material Processing staff:
    • Hire staff with support from HR Partners and Manager
    • Train and coach staff and provide performance management
    • Create and implement staff development plans
    • Direct workflow; create and implement in-house procedures and work routines to allow staff to work efficiently and independently within the scope of their job
  • Technology:
    • Develop and maintain sufficient knowledge of relevant modules of the integrated library system (ILS) to support and troubleshoot its functionality
    • Investigate solutions and troubleshoot problems related to the ILS in both the  back-end, where cataloguers and other collection management staff enter data, and the front-end, where staff and community members search, browse, request, borrow, download, or otherwise access items from the collection
    • Research and understand existing and new technologies required to support cataloguing work.
  • Support collection development and borrower services work
  • Provide customer service, and addresses questions and concerns related to cataloguing practices and functionality of the public-facing catalogue

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES?

Education and Experience: 
  • Graduate Degree in Library Science, Information, or another Human Services Field and two (2) years of related experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree and four (4) years of related experience

  • Two (2) years of Post-Secondary and six (6) years of related experience

Specific Knowledge & Technical Experience:

Required:
  • Experience working in an Integrated Library System(ILS)
  • Understanding of Machine Readable Catalogue (MARC) records, including author, subject, and series authority headings
  • Knowledge of trends and best practices in cataloguing
  • Read and write English
  • Excellent communication, conflict resolution and customer service skills
  • Demonstrated leadership experience and ability to provide instruction, coaching and training
  • Demonstrated ability to address staff performance issues
  • Experience working with diverse communities
  • Intermediate computer knowledge and skills including:
    • Functions of a web browser
    • Microsoft office applications
    • Social media applications
  • Intermediate technology skills including:
    • Willingness to learn and experiment with additional tools and technologies
    • Willingness to support others in learning technical skills and concepts
Assets:
  • Understanding of database design or functionality
  • Experience working with vendors
  • Fluency in a second language
  • Process improvement training or experience

TRAVEL
The job will require occasional travel between our various library branches and community sites within the Halifax Regional Municipality. Access to reliable transportation is necessary. 
 

Hourly Rate

$36.92 - $42.04
