JOB SUMMARY
The Life Skills Instructor, under the supervision of the Program Director, plays a vital role in supporting families with children residing in the Family Villa program, a Permanent Supportive Housing Program. This position is responsible for designing, coordinating, and facilitating engaging life skills classes that promote personal growth, family stability, and long-term self-sufficiency. Through compassionate instruction and individualized support, the Life Skills Instructor helps residents build essential tools to navigate daily challenges and thrive within their community.
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provides weekly life skills classes to Family Villa residents, covering topics such as parenting strategies, employment readiness, vocational development, financial literacy, substance use recovery, mental health wellness, and other relevant areas based on resident needs.
- Researches current literature, curricula, and best practices to ensure all instructional content aligns with the latest evidence-based approaches in life skills education and supportive housing.
- Develops comprehensive training materials including lesson plans, instructor guides, PowerPoint presentations, handouts, worksheets, videos, and creative activities to support effective and engaging instruction.
- Cultivates a safe, inclusive, and respectful classroom environment that encourages residents to share experiences, support one another, and actively participate in group learning.
- Builds partnerships with community organizations and coordinates guest-led workshops that enhance the educational experience and connect residents with valuable external resources.
- Maintains accurate records of resident attendance, participation, and completed coursework, ensuring documentation is organized and compliant with program standards.
- Collects and reviews resident feedback through monthly evaluations to assess the effectiveness of classes and inform ongoing improvements to curriculum and delivery.
- Observes resident engagement, communication, and behavior during sessions to identify learning needs and provide appropriate support or referrals when necessary.
- Participates in monthly staff meetings with the Program Director to align class offerings with program goals, share insights, and contribute to continuous program development.
- Will think and act quickly and efficiently in emergencies.
- Will drive on Agency business.
- Physical presence at the program is required.
ESSENTIAL JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Associate’s degree preferred in social work or in a related field or Two (2) years’ full-time work experience providing direct client services in a mental health, substance abuse, social services, educational or similar setting.
- Certified training in emergency first aid procedures is preferred.
- Must be able to visually monitor and assess resident behavior, safety, and engagement throughout program activities.
- Demonstrates professionalism and empathy while working collaboratively with residents, including those experiencing substance use, mental health challenges, and parenting responsibilities.
- Accurately document resident interactions, behavioral observations, and routine facility events in a timely and appropriate manner, maintaining clear and organized records.
- Perform routine inspection of facility grounds.
- Regularly observe the apartment grounds for the safety of children and adults
- Ability to work in an environment where there are children of all ages and maintain a safe environment.
- Intermediate computer skills in Office 365, Teams, Zoom and other communication/meeting platforms.
- Possess a valid driver’s license and have access to a dependable means of transportation that is properly insured and operated in accordance with all laws. Agency insurer authorization is required.
- Ability to pass a criminal background check.
- Ability to pass a pre-employment, drug screen, and TB test.
