SUMMARY
Contributes to Columbus Humane’s mission and vision by providing comprehensive subsidized care including preventative wellness, medical treatment, nutritional, and surgical/dental services for at-risk pets at the Columbus Humane Essential Care Center (CHECC).
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Thinks, communicates, and acts in the best interest of Columbus Humane and our human and animal clients at all times; models our mission and values in all job-related functions.
- Works closely with the Chief Medical Officer, fellow veterinarians, and support staff to oversee and ensure all appropriate medical procedures and protocols are being employed for the care and handling of all animals served.
- Thinks creatively to meet the needs of patients and clients within the resources available.
- Uses good judgement, communicates openly and supportively with clients when explaining medical options and available services.
- Performs animal surgical preparation, surgical procedures, and aftercare as necessary. This includes spay/neuter, dental procedures, and other soft tissue surgeries as needed and recommended.
- Provides occasional on-call support for after-hours and holiday animal emergency services; maintains flexibility to help Columbus Humane provide appropriate services to the animals, clients, and staff members, and for special operations.
- Provides consultation on veterinary issues to internal and external constituents, including opportunities to conduct seminars and other educational opportunities.
- Periodically staffs high-volume vaccination clinics during weekend or evening hours (scheduled well in advance, approximately 6 times per year).
- Maintains animal medical records in a very timely manner. This includes, but is not limited to, physical exams, treatment plans and rechecks, lab work, client communications and follow-up, forensic exams, and autopsy reports.
- Recognizes that data entry is crucial and time sensitive in maintaining animal records and prioritizes accordingly.
- Serves as a mandated reporter of animal abuse and provides expert opinions in the form of written documentation and verbal testimony as required in support of ongoing investigations of the Cruelty Investigations Department.
- Assists and participates in special events as scheduled or requested.
- Actively promotes Columbus Humane’s mission, services, programs, and events. Participates in fundraising as requested.
- Actively supports staff and volunteers; promotes the development of skills related to the advancement of our goals and mission.
- Represents Columbus Humane in a professional and courteous manner at all times.
- Provides quality service to clients, volunteers, and staff recognizing their individual contribution to the success of our organization.
- Communicates patient and client needs to social workers and program managers. Makes referrals to other agencies, veterinary care providers and services as needed.
- Engages in safe, responsible, and legal handling, use, and recording of controlled substances.
- Makes certain all necessary logs are kept up to date through established protocols, including surgical, narcotic, radiology & laboratory logs.
- Contribute to the maintenance of a comfortable, clean and safe environment of which clients, the staff and the management can be proud.
- Model an “owner” mentality in hospital by demonstrating willingness to assist all employees for the success of the hospital.
Requirements
- DVM/VMD degree from accredited university, licensed in the state of Ohio.
- Experience in high volume surgeries, animal shelter/herd health medicine and/or exotics medicine desired.
- Experience with Microsoft Office.

- Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must possess a valid Ohio Driver’s License and insurable driving record. Must possess a current and valid Ohio Veterinary License.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from clients, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Longer hours when necessary and demanded by population and/or special cases. Extended periods of sitting, standing, stretching, and bending. Must be able to lift 50 pounds, as will be lifting animals for examinations and surgeries.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in a normal veterinary clinic setting including exposure to hazardous chemicals and potential exposure to parasites and infectious diseases that can be carried and transmitted by animals.
