About the Department
The City of Brentwood seeking applications for the 2026 Internship Program. This internship program is built to be a focused learning experience for the students. Interns will not only gain on-the-job training and experience related to their studies but will also gain knowledge of the public sector. This is a mentorship program to help students expand their network of professional connections and acquire career guidance along the way.
The internship program will run from the beginning of January to the end of May 2026. The schedule will vary by internship position but will include after school hours and may include the ability to work some weekends. The City has four internship positions available at this time.
Engineering Department:
This Internship offers a valuable opportunity of mentorship and engagement in communication and coordination to deliver successful projects for the City. Some experiences may include:
- Assist with Engineering website updates
- Perform field investigations in response to customer calls
- Request quotes, construction staking, and materials testing
- Assist with preparing Engineer’s Cost Estimates
- Assist/perform stormwater treatment measure inspections and trash assessments
- Conduct, compile, and analyze research for assigned projects (ex: Solid Waste Recycling Program, Clean Water Program, etc.)
- Create bid summary and input bid schedules for construction projects
- Assist Construction Inspectors with creating Daily Inspection Logs for City projects
- Create maps utilizing the City’s Geographic Information System (GIS) and map making software
- Update the City’s infrastructure data based on recently completed projects
- Close-out encroachment permits
- Review Traffic Control Plans (i.e. temporary street, sidewalk or lane closures)
- Learn about budgets, expense tracking, fees, and private development review/approval processes
Finance & Information Systems Department:
The City of Brentwood Finance & Information Systems Department is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic intern to join our team. This internship provides a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in local government finance and to see how financial decisions impact real people and projects.
During your internship, you’ll gain:
- Government finance experience – see how taxpayer dollars are managed and allocated
- Budget preparation skills – help build financial plans that follow city priorities
- Accounting fundamentals – exposure to fund accounting, reporting, and audits
- Analytical tools – experience working with financial software, spreadsheets, and data
- Professional skills – including research, communication, teamwork, and project support
Some more specific experiences will include:
- Assisting with preparing and editing a variety of financial, accounting, budgetary, and statistical documents and reports
- Working with the Finance team to publish formal Financial Documents
- Preparing and updating the documents for the new fiscal year
- Updating the creative and visual aspects of documents, making them appealing and accessible to the public
- Assisting with special projects in support of Finance and other City Departments
Parks and Recreation:
The Parks and Recreation Department is seeking a motivated, self-starting Intern to join our dynamic and fun Recreation Division! This hands-on opportunity allows you to work alongside experienced staff and contractors who design and deliver classes, programs, and community-wide events.
You’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to plan, implement, and wrap up successful events while contributing to a passionate, team-oriented environment that serves the community.
As an intern, you may gain knowledge in these key areas:
- Recreation program organization, services, operations, and activities
- Proper care and use of recreation equipment, materials, and supplies
- Modern office practices, software, and technology used in the field
- Principles and practices of customer service
- Safe work practices
Potential projects and experiences include:
- Supporting community events through set-up, implementation, and tear-down
- Assisting with youth programs such as Jr. Warriors Basketball
- Inventory and research for Arts Commission projects
- Providing customer service to residents and program participants
- Capturing event moments through photography and media support
Public Works Department - Fleet Division:
Gain experience in the trades! The Public Works Fleet Division is looking for an intern that is a motivated self-starter. As an intern you will be expected to learn and participate in all aspects of the day-to-day operation of the City's fleet. Some experiences may include:
- Light work in the shop
- Changing tires
- Repairing flats
- Oil Changes
Minimum Qualifications
The Internship Program is available to current high school students. Please be sure to include in your application the following:
- High school you are currently attending (notate this in the education section of your application)
- If applicable, which CTE Pathway Program you are enrolled in (notate this in the Supplemental Questions)

- Letter of Reference - Please attach a signed letter of reference from a teacher or high school administrator. Liberty Union High School District students may use this template for their letter.
- Cover Letter - This letter should be addressed to the Hiring Department. Explain why you are interested in the internship and highlight the skills, experiences, and qualities that make you a strong candidate for the position.
The recruitment process will consist of:
- Review of applications to ensure all materials have been submitted.
- Department Interview - All candidates that submit a completed application packet will have their documents sent to the Hiring Department. The Hiring Department will review all of the application materials and select the top candidates to be invited to interviews.
- Pre-Employment - Applicants who are offered the internship will be required to be fingerprinted through the City.
- Orientation - Applicants who have passed all of the pre-employment requirements and have submitted all of their documents will be scheduled for their first day of orientation.
